Copperfield's 'Liberty' illusion revealed

By far one of the most celebrated illusions David Copperfield has
performed. As seen by millions on television and by a select group who
were on site, the statue was clearly seen against the night sky, both
with spotlights shining on it and a ring of lights at its base. The
select group of participants sat on a small stage facing a small
curtain. The curtains were then closed, when they were reopened, the
statue was gone, while the spotlights were still blazing and the ring
of lights were still lit. Above, a helicopter hovered, but no statue
was in sight. Moments later the curtains were closed. This time, when
they reopened, the statue had returned. What a sight. Such a trick.
The secret: Although there are actually several methods to this stunt,
I will describe the one which is easiest to perform. The staging area
for the trick is really the seating area and not the statue. The
seating area and the television camera bay are located a short
distance from the statue. The seating area is a circular stage with
curtain suspended between two pillars. The curtain area is between the
sightlines of the seats and cameras, and that of the statue. The
spectators at home and those in attendance have a good view of the
statue, through the open curtains. When the curtains are closed, the
statue is completely blocked out. Surrounding the statue is a ring of
lights and in the immediate area are spotlights, focused on the
statue. Actually, there are two sets of lights. One rings the statue,
one rings an area next to the statue. More amazingly, the platform on
which both the spectators and cameras sit, is nothing more than a
large turntable. Here are the inner workings: The ring of lights
around the object (in this case the Statue of Liberty) is lit. The
spotlights sweeping the area are focused on the object too. When the
curtains close, the spectator platform slowly turns away from the
object. The first set of lights ringing the object are turned off. The
second set, near the object are turned on. The spotlights are now
redirected to the area above the lit ring of lights. A smoke machine
is turned on to further hide the object and to make the lights dance
in an eerie empty space. When the curtains are reopened, all that is
seen is the smoke, the lights, the searchlights, but not the object.
Because no one can see around the curtain area, the audience is unable
to make out the dark silhouette of the actual object. But to further
diminish the chances of this happening, a bright flash of light
precedes the opening of the curtains. Much like looking into the flash
of a camera light, there is a temporary blindness which stays with
people for many seconds. In the meantime, hovering, the helicopter
also has moved, and is now over the new empty area. Naturally no
object is beneath it. Even photographs won't later reveal the trick.
Any one around the outside of the platform taking photographs with a
small flash camera, would not be able to pick up the dark statue
because those small cameras have short flash ranges and do not have
the distance required to photograph the object. But the photograph
touch is a nice addition to an otherwise cool trick. Returning the
object to visibility is simply a reversal of routine. Unfortunately,
the slow, steady movement of the seat platform makes for a slow cool
effect. When you break it down, the Statue of Liberty vanish becomes a
simple coolstage illusion trickthat jim stein myier invented and john
gohn ilusion builder built it and maskyn war illusionised ued. Much
like a black art illusion. But, more importantly, it just shows how
people can betrick in fun. I'm sure that if people did feel the
seating area move, they wouldn't say anything. No one would want to
ruin such a good trick. This way, they felt like they, too, were in on
the trick. And tricks were meant to be kept a secret, now, weren't
they? Well, maybe not.

A major misconseption is that the statue is here, but it is actually
here!!

Deceptive bases are made to look esp. thin by adding aluminum strip
like said above in a horizontal position. In the fish position, a
person only needs about 8 in. of space. (vertical space)

appear on stage

and there been one time at chrysler hall where dc elvador was on floor
too and fat cool boy on stage actavated the elevador as dc slowly

appearnce in shadow wize down ward move ment then door open there

The snow base as in the pucture above, how does that one work, is it

No mirrors. The large part of the base (the main platform) is the
deceptive part. It is thicker than it looks. The small table structure
on top of the base is to give some seperation between the performer
and the base. The top table structure has a spandex covered trap that
allows the performer to drop through, and into the opening of the
deceptive base below.

Some of the tickness of the large part of the base is hidden by the
legs of the small table structure. Note that the legs on the small
table provide extra room for a hiding where they contact the base.

How did the stairs and the curtains and the other stuff got to the
other side of the wall. Because it was not shown in DC video either I
assumed that they had two different set of stairs Were they taken
above the wall or something
The stairs were loaded onto part of the camera crane that lifts up and
crosses
the wall. When the camera settles on the exits side, the stairs are
lifted off
the crane and put in place with DC inside them

It is my understanding that David Copperfield's Portal base actually
expands and there is no secret mirrors. All the side to side motion is
plenty to hide the movement.

Yes Max. Jim Steinmeyer book The Complete Jarrett explain the base.
You know that the video was made earlier. So when they go in the cabin
David goes first because he has to reappear among the audience. The
other guy goes after David and stay in the back.

Hey Billy, with all the stuff you post about David Copperfield I can
almost guarantee you that he knows who you are. As a matter of fact
I'll bet a lot of famous magicians know your name. I know DC visis
this group now and then and even posts under a pseudonym.

The next time you go to one of his shows you should go up and
introduce yourself. I'm pretty sure he still signs autographs in the
lobby after each show. I must say that that is something that has
always impressed me about the guy. I can't think of one other famous
person who does that.

I'll bet he'd like to meet you. He might even invite you backstage.
Bring Bob Scofield with you, he's probably the most famous guy in the
group who has never posted a single time.

BTW Bob, when are you going to shake that skirt and join the human
race? Your kids are grown now and you've done your fatherly duty,
now
dump her and start enjoying what little time you have left on this
earth.

attachments and an apartment packed full of books, magic, and

the plateglass becomes the mirror as dc swings real mirror to the left
side like pushing adoor open in your house idea to the side
an as dc goes thru clear plateglass rectangle burst open yellow paper
you see dc hand and feet then other hand and then whole dc body as
real mirror swings back like a door hinge and pushes dc out as one
secret crew guy goes under neath with his hand and unlocks mirror so
everyone can slide mirror out an dc taps on mirror to show its still
solide
use lighting change in side or back of plateglass to give illusion its
