The article about Dr. Hooker's Card Rise in the new Genii has got my
wheels
turning. Just how was it possible to make any card called for rise
from a
deck? The article states that the houlette was examined by the
spectators,
so I guess one or both needed to be switched. The article also
implies that
off-stage assistance was required. The effect was invented and first
performed in the 20's and the article says that it didn't use any
technology
then that couldn't have been applied 100 years prior to that. So
thread
seems to be a viable solution. I'm thinking a deck switch to a deck
prepared
with a thread attached to the top of every card. The threads would
rise up
to a framework above the stage and travel off-stage to the assistant.
Each
thread would have something attached to it saying which card it was.
The
background of the stage setting is sufficiently 'busy' enough to hide
the
thread in the right lighting.

Ahh, but that it would happen under a glass dome seems to be a
problem
with
this theory.

I never thought I'd live to see the day when Bill Page said "mofo".
Here's your horns Billy, now you're one of us.

It's time to add another juvenile to the kill file (and maybe to the
FAQ).

Maybe this group will be able to return to discussions of magic
sometime soon.
