miltary men and woman just move and trucks also as the 2 door
sields
close they moved over to theemty area that looks the same place
where the B2 bomber once sat and plus have a duplicate White Corvete
there for Lance to drive around in the Emty space to show that the
Stealth Jet its really gone:) no mirrors or realistick card board
photos there ps. on his on THe ROAD SPECIAL when he made his
Tour Bus apeppear Magically in the Nevada Desert he used that idea
like Franz Harry with realtistic card board photos of Back Ground
Scenry.

There are quite a number of new technologies being researched,
developed
and tested at various leading-edge defense contractor facilities, for
example, at Groom Lake/AREA 51's highly compartmentalized, multi-
faceted
conglomerate complexes.
Besides a new generation of VTOL-based UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
-
remotely-controlled surveillance platforms, some of which may be
disk-shaped), there are ongoing development and testing of
electrochromatic panels as part of innovations relevant to
"daytime-stealth" capabilities.
The electrochromatic panels are comprised of thousands of tiny
sensors
that function as video-cameras that take images of background
scenaries,
transferring them to the other panels on the other side of the
aircraft.
This gives the illusion that the aircraft is almost transparent. What
the ground observer sees is whatever background images behind (or
above)
the body of the aircraft that are transposed to the "observer's" side
of
the body of the aircraft.
For example, in a recent artist's rendition of a proposed "Stealth
Blimp" (POPULAR SCIENCE), one can see the stars from above (and
behind)
the blimp, giving it an illusion of being transparent, and making
detection somewhat difficult.
That an ongoing research, development and testing of such
electrochromatic panels at locations such as at Groom Lake/AREA 51
may
be taking place was first suggested in an article written by aviation
writer, Bill Sweetman (POPULAR SCIENCE - May of 1997).
Coincidentally,
after that article (suggesting that Groom Lake/AREA 51 was still
abuzz
with various projects) appeared on POPULAR SCIENCE of May, 1997, the
June, 1997 issue of POPULAR MECHANICS, in turn, strangely came out
with
an article by Jim Wilson suggesting that Groom Lake/AREA 51's
operations
were transferred to Green River missile launch complex in Utah. This
was
the beginning of the false rumor that AREA 51 had moved to a new
location in Utah.
The Green River missile launch complex right now still appears to be
an
old, abandoned site, with nothing visible of any significance. (As
far
as Utah is concerned, attention should rather be focused on DUGWAY
PROVING GROUNDS, where lots of innovative programs are ongoing, for
example, leading-edge research on biological-chemical warfare
programs).
In the meantime, Groom Lake/AREA 51's conglomerate complex is abuzz
with
new programs.
It is estimated that there are still anywhere from 1800 to 2300
defense-contractor employees constantly at work in highly
compartmentalized projects.

was 17 years old. I was heavily into magic and looked forward with

anticipation to a David Copperfield 'Special'. I was at a party and
recall asking the DJ to turn off the music for a bit so we could
watch
David. Copperfield proceeded to make the statue of liberty
'disappear'.
I turned the TV off in disgust thinking that Copperfield had gone too
far. My feeling was, and STILL is, that a trick should not be SO
impossible so as to make it unbelievable; I mean, we all know that
the
statue didn't go anywhere therefore we are left with trick
photography,
and that to me, really has NOTHING to do with magic.......or does it?

First, no, DC's Liberty illusion had nothing to do with trick
photography.
And, yes, a trick can be TOO impossible -- and Liberty is a good
example.
Even a 'real' magician (whatever that is) couldn't or wouldn't do
that.
This falls in the category of the 'too perfect' illusion. (Good
grief,
let's not start that thread again!)

There was one scene where a camera crew in a helicopter flew overhead
and filmed the spot where the statue 'use to be'. The spot was empty,
with the implication that the statue had disappeared. If this is not
a
trick WITH photography I don't know what is. I won't even get into
the
fact that he had at least 20-30 paid 'confederates'.......which is
usual
for him.

concept
is well known. For example, read the book The War Magician; Jasper
Maskelyne used the same principle to hide the Suez Canal from German
bombers.

So then they were simply filming an empty spot and saying that's
where
the statue use to be; hmmm, sounds tricky to me! Also, when you put up

curtain and only show the statue from ONE angle...THAT TOO would be
'trick photography'

at me, "I can't believe you did that.!"
I know a few lay people who are ready to follow David to Jonestown,
because they believe he "disappeared" the Statue of Liberty. Don't
spoil it for them. I wish I still had that ability to believe.....

the usual sense of the word. But it IS camera trickery in that it
requires the camera to work. A person standing in the general area
would
see exactly what happened unless his view was SEVERELY restricted, in
much the way a camera restricts the view of the audience. Which is why
I
despise that trick and all the variations on it. I don't object to
it's
being too unbelievable so much as the fact that it relies on camera
trickery and that is both "going too far" in the attempt to fool the
audience AND has the potential to severely damage television as a
medium
for magic performance. I'll stop before I get lost in that rant
again.

documetary on the history channel on that shown here in the states. I
read the book years ago and wanted to do the documetary and was just
talking about it, so I cannot wait to see the one some guy already
did
probably BBC and better than I could imagine I am suppose to get the
tape of it soon.....any news about Pinewood and the feature they were
suppose to do, I saw it was being done in an FX magazine to the trade
and heard nothing else about it in about four months.

Hi Billy,
I just published the secret to Copperfields Laser Illusion. Its in a
thread to something you wrote about DC. He's just detatching from the
upper portion of the legs and then sits down in a simi-squatting
position behind the legs. There was a lot of cutting away and editing
because the angles are critical AND the false waist and thighs (which
are shells inside his pants) are difficult if not impossible to
manuver
in. I the detatched position when he is behind the legs he can only
walk
with his legs from the knees down, thus the short steps. What is the
name of the trick where he vanished over the audience and ended up in
Hawaii? Most of the effect was video taped but the actual vanishing
and
reappearance over the audience is something I'll have to give some
thought to. I think he used Thurston's Million Dollar Mystery method;
hands down the most ingenious method ever invented by any magician.
DC
used it years ago to vanish a TV camera and back in 1984 to make a
baby
elephant appear. If any trick should classified as a national
security
secret, its the Million Dollar Mystery method. The book, Walter
Jeans:
Illusioneer was all about this trick and method, including
blueprints.
DC could also have accomlished the trick using something I saw on an
old
Penn & Teller show where a picture frame looks empty but isn't. The
frame contained a mirror. But because it was above the heads of the
crowd in a simi-dark theatre it looked like you could see right
through
it. Sam Sharp detailed every possible type of mirror work, including
the
secret for the Million Dollar Mystery in his book Conjuror's Optical
Secrets. A book so sensitive I keep mine in a safe. Thank goodness ts
out of print.
Also, when Copperfield comes to town his advance team contacts a temp
agency to fill the first 3 to 5 rows of seats with what we could call
stooges. He plays a lot of college towns and this is easily done.
Everybody, and I repeat EVERYBODY that was picked from the audience
during this special was a plant, right down to the little boy. It
didn't
used to be this way. I think he's either had a lot of bad experiences
or
he's become paranoid something could go wrong. The Sofa Levitation
was
done with his flying rig from a couple years ago. Notice how the two
guys never put their arms on the arm rests; it might have given away
the
secret. Because the sofa never swayed back and forth I became
convinced
it was the old flying illusion with a new name. The mulit-strand wire
set up guarantees the person or object will never sway even when he
or
it comes to an abrupt dead stop (see the patent illustration). Thats
the
whole reason for using multiple strands as opposed to two wires, one
on
either side. Its an impressive engineering feat.
The two girls in the boudoir, a combination of the Vampire Illusion
and
a false base.
The appearance at the beginning of the show was accomplished in a
similar manner to the method used in the exploding building special;
where he appeared on a steel plate. Lighting also played an important
factor. He gets away with murder using the old shadow box method of
keeping the light in front of him until the last minute. You can make
any box or cloth appear empty.

back to the area and shouts now! then on cue his stage hand crew
drops
the front canvase down first and now you see jet is gone! and then
Copperfield says take off your blinds folds we did it! and they
see what we allready see its complettly gone! with out a trace.

Effect : David Copperfield walks through the great wall of china When
David Copperfield goes inside the first box there was a switch made,
copperfield goes under the box and goes into the hollow stairs he
then
gets carried away inside the hollow stairs. A lookalike in shadow
form
pretends to walk through the first part of the wall, after he plays
his
part he gets inside the hollow base platform. By that time the
assistance's pull the sheets away to show that he walked through the
first part of the wall.
The stairs that copperfield is in is behind the camera boom as it
makes
a complete rotation over the wall. The assistants on the other side
of
the wall take the same stairs and put it next to the other plate
form.
The assistants climb the special stairs and hold up a small white
sheet
of cloth. It looks like David Copperfield is pushing his and and face
through the cloth. The secret behind this action is that the person
on
the right is just controlling a pair of fake hands which he controls
with his right-hand. The person on the left is just pushing a fake
face
through the cloth with his left-hand.

The two assistants then drop the small sheet cloth and listen to the
wall to see if David is all right. They then slowly roll down the
sheets
to cover the frame box up and make sure it is tucked in good, they go
down the stairs to wait for copperfield to make his way through the
second part of the wall.
All he has to do now is get out of the hollow stairs and inside the
box
and watch his angles with the light. He then comes closer to the
light
so it looks like he is coming through the second part of the wall. He
pulls the sheets away to reveal himself, the white cloth stays on the
floor because it contains the props.
