E-mail Print Link Magician, illusionist and sometimes dater of
supermodels David Copperfield performs Tuesday night at the Pikes Peak
Center.

Copperfield had disappeared to his private island in the Bahamas when
The Gazette called, but through the magic of e-mail, he answered a few
questions:

Gazette: How do you fit in with the future of magic, with the
prominence of performance-oriented magicians like David Blaine and
Chriss Angel?

Copperfield: The Art of Magic is the oldest of all the performing
arts, practiced in an unbroken succession from ancient times, before
even the Egyptian civilization. I would say the umbrella of this art
is big enough for all of us. As far as how I fit in, I will have to
leave that to the historians -- as I stand on the shoulder of MY
predecessors.

Related Results Gazette: How can you continue to trump yourself? Is
there a limit to the ever-bigger illusions?

Copperfield: I have always wanted to put a woman's face on Mt.
Rushmore, straighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and vanish the moon -
- so you see, I have my work cut out for me!

Gazette: Is there a stunt that's so big that you've dreamt of it, but
never been able to try it?

Copperfield: I had this dream once of making the Earth stand still. By
that I mean, the sun stops moving in the sky, and nighttime never
manifests itself. Dreams (and nightmares) are often a source of
inspiration for many of my illusions.

Gazette: Did the movies "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist" inspire a
renewed interest in the history of magic?

Copperfield: I enjoyed both of those films as they give wide spread
exposure to the Art of Magic. I think the one interesting theme
consistent between both films is the passion that each magician has
for his art. And this I can tell you, is something that also exists in
my daily life -- otherwise I wouldn't be performing over 500 shows a
year. I love what I do, and am delighted to bring my Art to people all
over the world.

Gazette: Do audiences' tastes in magic change?

Copperfield: This entire show is based on making dreams come true.
People don't dream of pulling rabbits out of a hat, but they do dream
of seeing someone they haven't seen in some time coming back into
their lives. I'm not bringing people back from the grave, but I am
reuniting people through the Art of Magic -- Live on stage - - and
transporting them to a far away place right in front of the audience's
eyes!

More than anything, it's the audience participation that keeps things
a fresh as ever -- I never know what is going to happen with the
people that get randomly selected to participate in the show.

Oftentimes those are also some of the funniest moments in the evening.
Also, each year there are some new illusions moved into the show to
replace older illusions so there are always new challenges for me.
