Shrink Fit Holders

Guys/Gals,
What shrink fit mill tooling holders have you any experience with? I'm
looking at this option for doing some light milling, but I have a somewhat
long tool length and length of engagement of the tool (approx 1" on a 3/8"
EM). This will be on a 30 taper machine. I'm considering it for rigidity
purposes and clearance issues. Most of the shrink fit holders I have seen
have narrow necks allowing a lot more clearance.

Your opinions / experience is greatly appreciated as usual.

I have been using shrink holders for nearly ten years now. They have much
better concentricity than a collet chuck, are inherently balanced (if high
spindle rev's are your thing) and they are not buggered when you put a
cutter with a Weldon flat in (unlike a hydraulic chuck).

I have found that 2 diameters engagement of the shank into the holder is
plenty - I have run 32mm solid carbide 300mm stick-out on 64mm engagement -
and currently run a

Thanks for the useful info Bob. This will be in a high volume production
environment, so changes will be somewhat regular. Will only be using
solid carbide EM's, so no worries about the HSS. We have a shrink fit
heat/cool machine in another dept, but I'm going to have to invest in a
30 taper pot for it, as everything they have is 40 taper. I didn't want
to invest in a pot for little gain. Sounds like this may be the way I go,
I'm going to need all the rigidity I can muster out of the system because
of the long dia/L ratio.

Thanks Joe, as I posted back to Bob, I have access to a machine, just have
to purchase a 30 taper pot for it. Hopefully it would help increase tool
life.

I just looked in my Haimer catalogue and the seem not to carry 30 taper
hardware. Perhaps it just isn't in this book.

Shrink fit holders are the way to go. I've purchased a bunch in the last
year, all 50 taper, and Haimer and Iscar have been great.
The balance is good even with 6 inch holder gage lengths holding 6 inch
extensions that have 4.5 inches of tool projection running at 12,000 RPM.

Also, depending on the diameter, Iscar has some 7 inch gage length holders.

I saw the shorty ER holders..and am contemplating, especially for those 2
mm drills. The machine I'm getting is a BT30 taper, so far, seems to be
somewhat limited supply of the really good stuff in that taper.
