  my ducts are scaring me!

Hope someone can give me some guidance on this one!

I removed the dropped ceiling in part of the downstairs of the 1981
house we just bought in Austin, Tx, and am having to reroute all of
the ducts in the first floor to get them up in the joists. That's not
a problem - I'm just replacing the old gray flex-pipe with new pipe of
the same diameter.

But upon pulling out the old stuff, I saw that ALL of the ductwork -
from the 12" cold air return to the two 10" main feeders from the
attic unit to the duct board distribution triangles and ducts to the
individual vents, had a think black powdery crust lining at least the
bottom surfaces of the ducts and duct board register boxes (boots?).
The crust is dry, dark gray/black, and will flake off if you scrape
it. It's kinda furry, but it's dry. We did 2 mold tests, and they
were not out of the ordinary for this kind of house. It's kinda like
just 30 years of dust and dirt accumulating in the ducts, and crusting
up. Is this normal?

  Thermally Controlled Diffusers

Which brand of thermally controlled diffusers offer the widest range of
temperature set points? In particular I would like to find a way to set
temperature between 69 and 71 for a unit that has both heating and cooling
thermostats built in.

Acutherm makes the Therma-Fuser product, and it has a set point range
between 70 and 78.

I'm also interested in finding alternative products that have digital wall
thermostats to allow the end user to have some input into the thermofuser
set points. Acutherm appears to have this.

If there are any brands to avoid I would appreciate knowing about those as
well.

  Power Humidifier

I am having several local hvac companies come out in the next few
weeks to give me quotes on a humidifier for my 4,000 SF Ranch in
Michigan. I have hot water baseboard heat, but I also have an air
handler for summer air conditioning. All the hvac guys I have talked
to have recommended the aprilaire power humidifier (model 350/360 I
think) mounted on the ducts and having the blower run sometimes during
the winter. The last contractor, however, recommended a Skuttle power
steam humidifier. Anyone have any experience, either good or bad with
the above units? I plan on letting a qualified hvac company do the
work, but I want to go into this knowing a little bit about what I am
getting. Thanks

  Ignitor failure

Author: rfofaky

I have a customer who's ignitor I replaced 3 times in the last 3 years.
Everything seems ok. Proper voltage, no major vibration when running,
polarity ok. The only thing I noticed was a loose ground wire in a junction
box near the unit. But I don't see how a loose ground wire could cause
premature failure of an ignitor. Any idea's? Its a comfortmaker furnace.
Thanks.
