What does a suspended chord do?

Author: hcbowman

By coincidence, suspended chords show up in several of the songs I've
started to learn.

Hedy West - "Five Hundred Miles"

... you can (ii) hear the whistle blow (iii) -- a (IV) hundred (sus5)
miles.
[Chorus] (V) A hundred miles...

Herald, Rinzler, Yellin -- "Stewball"

... (ii) he never drank (V) water (sus5) -- (V) He always drank (I)
wine...

??? -- "Michael Row the Boat Ashore"

... Michael (iii) row the boat ashore (ii) -- Halle - (sus4) lu - (IV)
- (I) ja....

In each case, the suspended chord resolves to its related major
chord. Is this the usual thing for a suspended chord (like the V7
tends to the I)? What else might it be used for?

Thanks,

  riffs

I have been playing around with these kind of riffs for some time

For example,

John Sykes playing Cold Sweat with Thin Lizzy is he playing all single notes
on A and D strings ...CDDCDDFFG CDDCDDGGF

Ted Nugent Cat ScratchFever single notes on A string CDD#D#CDCD#
CDD#D#D#D#DC

What effects are these guys using to get the sounds? What ornamentations are
they adding ie any two note chords?
