Because the defendants, priest or church, most often refuse to put the
evidence before a jury. They expect the evidence that will be presented
will result in guilty verdicts or heavy financial penalties, so they
settle without presenting the evidence. Clearly, the priests and the
church know the evidence against them and expect guilty verdicts. They
are settling for the best deal they can get, and in the church's case,
the evidence of their complicity never becomes public. They hid molester-
priests, and now they're hiding the evidence that they hid molester-
priests.
Face it, Dook, if the evidence wasn't overwhelming, they wouldn't settle
for hundreds of millions of dollars or decades in prison.
