Corn Prices Driving Up Ranchers' Costs
Last Edited: Thursday, 25 Jan 2007, 7:42 PM CST
FORT WORTH --
The demand for ethanol has doubled the price of corn. But with
the third largest corn crop on record, prices should be going down.
"Cattle or horse feed that once had a lot of corn in it, now it's
being substituted with oats and barley," said feed store retailer
Sandy Olah, "and those prices are going up."
It's the corn prices that are hurting cattle ranchers. They rely on
feedlots to quickly double a calf's weight and get it ready for market.
"We're in a period of uncertainty," admitted cattle rancher Pete
Bonds.
Corn prices have gone from $2 to $4 per bushel. Ranchers say that's
costing them about $200 dollars a head for calves headed to the
feedlots. Even worse, cattleraisers are bracing for even higher prices.
"$5 or $6, we're in a whole new ballpark again," said Bonds. "We're
gonna have to get cattle a lot bigger outside, which means fewer
and fewer cattle."

OK. If you say so. But I'm posting from overseas, and have talked to
American educators who say the kids in Europe are even stupidier than
your son. It's all relative.

Actually, it maintenance personel. They have to find
workers abroad, because American public school
science and engineering education was ruined by the

You have to look for the Really Big Bananas. A whale wouldn't fit on an
ordinary-sized banana, after all.
