I do not believe it is that complex. I think it's just the crowning
glory of dumbing down. The right wing hated the sixties; hated the
great wave of lefty boomers who surged out onto the nation's roads and
streets and who insisted the war end. They also hated that the rich
middle class, well educated, kennedy mourning, baby boomers also had
a few parties out there, and also began gossiping about animism and
buddhism snd krshna with very little jesus talk mixed in. And the
right organized. They wanted to make the sixties and fun and
literature and movies illegal unless they were informed by
christianity. And sports and business needed to be more declaritively
about religion. And even in matters of law, well, ungodly laws had to
go.
The dumbing down arises from a shrinking tax base and tax starved
schools. It also comes from a willed ignorance. This last has a
myriad of expressions but sounds like this: "no I don't have any
kids-- that I know of"
or "Oh sure Jack's a good n, but most of em ain't" or even "It's like
any thing else: There's good ones and there's bad ones.". And also
comes from the fact that excellent minds aren't going to be interested
in watered down, turgid undimentional stories that are church
sanctioned. So amongst many effects, standards fall. In fact the
skill of speech and critical listening plummet. But! That's
perfectly alright! The republicans have forrnulas! And gimmicks.
They've studied this. And they can mock and misrepresent Obama's
statements with great skill, tying up the air waves for many days
while nothing actually said is reported or discussed either.
