One day a man is walking down the street when he sees an old man with a
nice looking dog. He goes over to the man and asks: 'does your dog bite?'
the old man replies 'No never'. When the man bends down to stroke the dog,
it immediately takes a snap at his hand. The man says 'I thought you said
your dog did not bite! 'I did' replies the old man, but this isn't my dog!'

"I think their response to this disaster shows they can act, and they can
care. They seem to be aware that a disaster like this can pull the country
together, and bring them support."
- DALI YANG, director of the East Asian Institute in Singapore, on the
Chinese authorities.

I just got finished reading 'Armed Madhouse' by Greg Palast. What a book.
http://www.gregpalast.com/madhouse/index.php/about/
In case you don't know, it's the book the college student was holding up,
when addressing John Kerry, when he was dragged away by campus security and
tazered.
I am losing faith, what with the madness surrounding the Demo primaries and
the damage it's doing to unity among progressives.
But I'm not planning on moving to Central America.
Not just yet, anyway.

http://globalwarming-arclein.blogspot.com/2008/05/holocene-climate-shift.html
The blog has 167 postings for 2007 and develops topics such as Terra
Preta,Solar,Algae culture,Oil alternative options and price, Arctic
sea ice, and many others.
It is best enjoyed by starting at the very first posting and tracing
the process of discovery and concept development.
I welcome new thoughts on the various topics introduced and look
forward to the championing of new topics.

I bought a Linux laptop about 4 months ago.... it's nice and all....
great processor, large 15" HD monitor, integrated WiFi, CDR/DVD drive,
3 hour battery.... only problem was that the distro it had on it had
way too many bugs.
SO, being a fan of the Unbutu distros I went in search of something
new.... the latest Unbutu actually made the effort to put the Open
Chrome drivers into the distro which meant my monitor would work.
BUT, it was still a little plain jane for me.... then I found this one
called g-OS that is built on the Unbutu source but has the look and
feel of a Mac desktop.
I am posting this while using it.... installed it about 2 hours ago
and everything is working great including my DVD player.... which had
problems under the original distro that came on it.
For those that are wanting to make the switch from Windows to Linux
and want an easy to use desktop environment it doesn't get any easier
than this.
PLUS, if you are using Unbutu or one of it's many spin offs (like g-
OS) or Linspire you can now use Linspire's CNR library to install
other programs.

Microsoft star gazing
Deborah Gage, Chronicle Staff Writer
(05-12) 19:37 PDT -- Computer users now can fly through the universe,
viewing stars, planets and celestial bodies as an astronomer would,
with Tuesday's introduction of the Worldwide Telescope by Microsoft.
The virtual service combines images and databases from every major
telescope and astronomical organization in the world.
Microsoft says it is providing the resource for free in memory of
Jim Gray, the Microsoft researcher who disappeared last year while
sailing his boat to the Farallon Islands on a trip to scatter his
mother's ashes. The project is an extension of Gray's work.
"I never imagined (the telescope) would be so beautiful," said
Alexander Szalay, an astronomy professor at Johns Hopkins
University who worked with Gray on astronomy projects for more
than a decade.

Duck Deaths Confirm First Nations' Fears
Fort Chipewyan, May 2, 2008 -- Only one day after the 500 ducks were found
dead in the tailings pond at Syncrude Canada in the Alberta tar sands, a
local Mikisew Cree hunter killed a duck that was totally covered in oil.
Community leaders have no doubt that the duck was a victim of the toxic
tailings ponds near Fort McMurray, 300 kilometres south of Fort Chipewyan.
The oil-drenched duck will be released to the Canadian Wildlife Service for
further investigation.
The Athabasca Chipewyan and Mikisew Cree First Nations of Fort Chipewyan,
Alberta, say the deaths of up to 500 ducks in toxic tailings ponds at
Syncrude Canada once again confirm growing concerns of tar sands development
upstream from their community. The community has escalated its efforts to
determine the true state of its highly toxic waters, sediment and wildlife,
including waterfowl, which the community knows have unusually high levels of
arsenic, mercury and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Sorry for the last minuteness of this. I just found out about it 30 minutes
ago.
**********Begin forwarded message************
Thanks for sending these. It was good to have you on the conference call
today.
I set up the tentative time for the next phone conference in May, awaiting
verification from Amanda Lockwood, Mark's assistant. I requested a 90 minute
time frame for this next call, so all topics will be covered, hopefully,
with ease.
The date is Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from 1:00-2:30 pm Eastern Time. If it
changes, I will post a notice immediately. The phone number is
1-866-742-4928. Code: 6246993
Topic of the phone call: Co-operations talks for rainbow gathering.
To all receiving this: Raven and I will be passing through Wyoming in the
next couple weeks, so we can check on some snow levels and get back to those
interested in scouting early.
Tom, I'll be in touch with you on this and will probably stop by to
purchase some maps.
