Newbie needing advice on picking free USENET server

Near the end of June I won't have access to USENET anymore through
Roadrunner/Time Warner Cable (bastards are discontinuing that service)
and I was wondering what are/is the best free USENET server to use
through basic newsreaders such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Seamonkey for
example.

Thank You :)

Free news servers are a joke. They abuse their subscribers by doing one or
more of the following:

1) arbitrarily denying your free speech rights
2) having all sorts of stupid rules that put limits on how many times you
can post, etc.
3) harboring admins who are on a power trip and think they can be...

You'll have to ask Chuckcar about that one. Not only is he a free news
server sniffer when it comes to anything that's free he's more like a
bloodhound.

I don't think so, but Alexander can tell you for sure.

Isn't UpChuckcar one of those pale, obese Canadians? Down here in the
southern U.S. we are deluged by these obnoxious, rude cheapskates every
winter. Their idea of a tip for a good meal in a sit down restuarant is 25
cents. Some beaches have banned Speedo bathing suits because so many
walrus-looking Canadians were parading around in them that even the gay boys
were upchucking at the horror of the sight.

I wondered how long it would be before you started blatantly
advertising here.

I wouldn't recommend Altopia for binaries. It's multi-party retention
period is only 9.6 days, see:

I do agree that buying a block account is probably the best option for
some who's willing to pay and only reads text groups. However,
Octanews is a bit more pricey than others, and seems to be stuck in a
time-warp: no new updates for over a year. I guess that may simply
indicate it's been running perfectly during that time. :)

I should have mentioned that my main use is for posting occasional
queries to 24hoursupport.helpdesk or the dell NG and reading occasional
fun and drama on AUK. I don't post alot and I don't read binaries.

That sums up my needs with USENET pretty much, nothing fancy.
