This is a hypothetical dialogue, between analyst and non-sheepish patient, purportedly
one of many *forced* interviews, mandated by any of various authorities under any of
various circumstances, too numerous to list each possibility:
Psychiatrist to patient Joe: Please fill out this lengthy form
Patient Joe: I don't fill out forms; I know all too well of your corruptions; if
there's something you want to know, then ask me
doc: What's...

The MOTHERS Act is a bill to shove psychotropic drugs down the throats
of pregnant and new mothers considered at risk of Postpartum
Depression and Psychosis, as well as funnel them into the hospital
setting to "prevent" suicide or infanticide, where they will
potentially be subjected to electroshock and involuntary or extensive
hospitalization like Melanie Stokes - for whom the bill was
(ironically) named. [Theoretically all mothers are considered 'at
risk.'] The screening will consist of an invalid and unethical
questionnaire consisting of as few as 2-3 subjective items...
Also the bill states that it will establish new research projects on
minorities, use tax dollars to develop new drugs, and study
post-abortion depression and mental illness.

Despite voluminous warnings on the health dangers of antipsychotic
drugs - the use is increasing. Who prescribes antipsychotic
drugs? Mainly - psychiatrists:
"The study, which looked at visits to pediatricians and other doctors,
found that psychiatrists were the most likely to prescribe
antipsychotic drugs." New York Times, June 6, 2006

Antipsychotic Drug Use Up in Elderly Despite Warnings
August 25, 2008
MONDAY, Aug. 25 -- Safety warnings slowed the use of antipsychotic
drugs in seniors with dementia. But the overall use of the drugs in
the elderly increased, a finding which suggests that warnings may not
be sufficient to protect patients, Canadian researchers say.
Between late 2002 and June 2005, Health Canada issued three warnings
that three new atypical antipsychotic drugs increased the risk of
stroke and death in elderly patients with dementia.

Grassley Probes Psychiatrists Over Ties To Pharma
By Ed Silverman
July 11th, 2008
The investigation by the Senate Finance Committee, where Chuck
Grassley is the ranking Republican, into the ties between drugmakers
and medicine is expanding. After targeting grants issued to academic
psychiatrists, Grassley now wants the American Psychiatric Association
to open its books for a look-see at pharma funding.
Psychiatrists, of course, prescribe antidepressants and
antipsychotics, both of which have stirred controversy. And
psychiatrists have frequently shown up at the top of lists of doctors
receiving pharma money. This week, for instance, Vermont's Attorney
General released its annual report showing that, of the top 100
recipients, psychiatrists received the highest level of payments, and
11 psychiatrists received a total of about $626,000, or approximately
20 percent of the total value of payments. The average amount received
by psychiatrists was nearly $57,000.

TeenScreen has a downside
July 05, 2008
I am writing in response to a May 28 article, Saving Lives One Teen
at a Time. John Perona from Kitsap Mental Health shared his goal to
screen Kitsap teenagers for mental health issues with the intention of
providing intervention. According to the article, this goal would be
accomplished by the implementation of a program called TeenScreen, a
combined effort between the school districts, Kitsap Mental Health and
the Kitsap County Health District.
In most cases, intervention means referral to psychiatric services
and treatment with psychotropic drugs (the ones with the FDA Black Box
warnings). A survey of child psychiatrists conducted by The Journal
of the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry found that
nine out of 10 patients were prescribed drugs.

By LAURIE TARKAN
June 24, 2008
Ramona Lamascola with her mother, Theresa Lamascola.
Ramona Lamascola thought she was losing her 88-year-old mother to
dementia. Instead, she was losing her to overmedication.
Last fall her mother, Theresa Lamascola, of the Bronx, suffering from
anxiety and confusion, was put on the antipsychotic drug Risperdal.
When she had trouble walking, her daughter took her to another doctor
the younger Ms. Lamascolas own physician who found that she had
unrecognized hypothyroidism, a disorder that can contribute to
dementia.
Mrs. Lamascola no longer takes antipsychotics.

In a democracy, we have a right to "informed consent." Physicians have
a legal obligation to tell us the facts regarding (1) diagnosis and
(2)treatment. Regarding diagnosis: Is there a disease or isn't there?
Whichdisease? If there is no disease, that leaves emotional or
psychological. Regarding treatment, physicians have a duty to tell us
the facts, about allavailable treatments, not just the treatment they
prefer. The choice is ours. This is informed consent.

Inappropriate prescribing 'cutting lives short'
Sarah Boseley, health editor
Friday June 20, 2008
The use of so-called "chemical cosh" antipsychotic drugs to subdue
people with dementia will be curbed as part of a government strategy
to help the growing numbers of people with the condition.
In an interview with the Guardian the social care minister, Ivan
Lewis, made it clear he was unhappy with the number of dementia
patients, usually in care homes, who are being heavily sedated, with
risks to their health. "I'm really perturbed by this question of the
inappropriate prescribing of drugs," he said. "We sometimes dehumanise
stories like this - it is my or your mum and dad who is being
over-medicated."
