Back years ago I drove in these interstate highways in North Carolina
and see Latino men working the shovels while their white supervisors
run the backhoes. Another observation was as the cars and trucks
zoomed on the highway, Latino men ...they'd be out in the grass mediam
mowing the yards and weed eating around the steel guardrails that keep
you from heading into oncoming traffic. Of course the feds weren't
directly hiring...they subcontracted in an effort to distance
themselves from whatever. My sincere belief is it was done to save the
taxpayer money. Well.....the protected employers, the utility
companies, took notice and said if they can do it so can we. So the
utility companies set a course on downsizing their own labor force and
subcontracting. I got a red neck friend, due to timing in his life on
earth, has gotten caught up in all this. He's a backhoe operater and
he's been bitter for a long, long time.
He moved from this subcontractor to this as these big utility
companies switch subcontrators for whatever reason. I gotta feeling we
could come up with some reasons. My buddy, he'd cuss and scream at the
hiring practices calling his new fellow employees wetback bastards,
saying he'd just as soon shoot them on the spot as anything else. And
then he'd say, "I hate a godamn nigger as well." Well...this has gone ...
