Question for you music experts

Years ago in these churches they did not have but maybe a couple music
books so a lead singer would sing a lyric and the group would follow
singing the same lyric. It is a named musical form....and.....still
practiced today even though you don't hear it much. Can you tell me
what that music form is so i can reasrch it on the internet.

I wonder if you mean "counterpoint"? This is more often referred to
instrumental music but I suppose it may be used to refer to lyrics.

It is a very much used musical form that Bach and many, many others
used frequently.

Charlie, you may not have ever heard the kind of singing he is talking
about. But it is not counterpoint. It is more like Gospel, without the
humorous touch. It is a kind of church singing where they don't have a
choir. They might have a piano and a piano player, but also might not.
