An acquaintance of ours just paid several thousand dollars for his
14th horse. He just recently complained that he can't afford to buy
health insurance for his family. JD, maybe you can explain to me what
it is about horses that puts them ahead of a family. I'm NOT saying
you do, but this guy does. My wife suggested that he sell one of them
and buy health insurance, He looked at her as if she had told him to
eat them.
On another health insurance issue, a local Catholic hospital, St.
Joseph's tried to ship a legal immigrant from Honduras back to her
home country because she fell into a coma while giving birth and does
not have health insurance. The government can't deport her because she
is here legally, but the hospital determined they could because she
could not pay for treatment. Her family claims being sent to a
Honduras hospital would be a certain death sentence and obtained an
injunction to give them time to come up with some way to pay. There
will be a hearing shortly to determine if the injunction should be
permanent.

The news report did not say. the family got the injunction. It seems
unlikely any judge would let the hospital transfer her without first
making sure there was at least a lawyer to represent her interests.
This was in Sunday's paper and news reports are sometimes less than
complete. It seems that the hospital informed the family that they
were going to transfer her rather than discuss it with them first but
again I don't know what the news did not report.

We don't. We are much too large for democracies to work. We live in
democratic republics in which we democratically elect representatives
but they make all the other decisions. That is why the lobbyists have
so much influence. With our population closing on China or India of
the 1950s, there is little hope for a better system.
