Dissolved

For decades, my family has opted for cremations rather than burial.
Now the media is talking about dissolving bodies in lye. Why am I
having such a negative reaction to that? Toci

Maybe because it is new? Everyone in my family, for generations are
buried, usually in a family plot in Ireland or in the case of my
parents and sister, in a small Churchyard in England. I have had many
discussions with my late Father regarding burial as I will be the
first of my family not to be buried. He was vehemently opposed to it
and even at my age, he tried to lay down the law, that he would not
allow it!! I suppose for him, it was just not an appropriate way to
lay someone to rest by burning them. Maybe for you it is unacceptable
to think of being laid to rest in a bath of lye?

There are no ashes to scatter. It is comforting to scatter ashes in a
place the departed loved. Dissolving a body sounds so gruesome to me.

I have the same situation and had the same reaction, Toci. I also wonder
why. I guess somehow ashes, whether scattered, buried or placed in an urn,
sound less yucky than sludge that is flushed away. I also wonder about the
effect on the water supply, when we are now told that we should not flush
pills into the water system.

Speaking o' that, I was catching up on some of my email.... Now I read
that flushing pills is only part of the problem. Another part is that
when we take meds, a lot of the meds go through our bodies and end up in
the toilet! ...

People seem to have an innate revulsion to slimy things and this sounds
slimy.

The movie "Amadeus" may bring forth visions of how Mozart was so
unceremoniously(sp?) disposed of in a community lye pit.

Yes. The expression "pulling the plug on someone" is usually thought
of as switching off the life support machine.

After a bath dissolution it would take on a whole new meaning.
