Does anybody on this group live in an area where coalbed methane is
extracted? I'd be interested to hear about your experience ...
A fairly big company called PetroBank (partly owned by Shell) has
obtained the necessary permissions to drill 150 of these wells on all
sides of our little town. The coalbed methane industry is largely
unregulated in BC; it is a new thing for us. Our aquifer is porus,
and what affects one area can easily wind up affecting the entire
Upper Similkameen River area.
I have found out that these wells, as part of the methane extraction
process, need 25,000 gallons of water a day (each well), which then
has to be trucked away or reinjected into the ground at deep levels.
Why? Because it is contaminated.
So I'm interested to know if any of you have ever lived around this
kind of energy development, and if so, what your experience has been.
sigh,
Annie, worried in BC

There is no such thing as "my air - my water". A simple analysis of
the facts shows that we all share the same water and air.

Water is going to become a scarce resource. We can't waste it or
contaminate it. Period!
