Suiko Tactics seems to suffer a bit from poor game design, yes.
Final Fantasy Tactics was much better in that regard. (I've got
a couple of others on my To Play list somewhere . . .)

For the past few days, I've been absorbed in Dwarf Fortress, which is
sort of the Roguelike answer to Civilization and similar games. Hopefully,
the "Oooh, shiny!" will wear off soon and I'll get my life back.
