I finished FFXII, um, a couple of months ago? Long enough ago for me
to have played through Legend of Dragoon (*good* game) and most of
Persona: Revelations (not nearly as good) since then. IIRC, Vayne's
actions are motivated as much by loyalty to the Empire and the desire
to keep Larsa's hands clean as his own ego, if that helps.

I haven't even tried to start Dirge yet--I do *not* need to
be distracted by my old FFVII fanfic when I'm finally maybe getting an
original novel-length work up to speed. Not sure how well I'd do at
it--probably not very well, but it depends on how it's structured. (On
the rare occasions that I play twitch-type games, I do so by either
memorizing the AI's patterns . . . or cheating. I think the last such
games I beat without that were Thunder Spirits and Hyperzone on the old
SuperNES. I did manage a few hours of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver not
all that long ago, but it's effectively impossible to die in that game.)

FFXII's soundtrack was nothing to write home about either, once you got past
the game-loading screen. Of course, the problem there is that Nobuo Uematsu
is no longer doing their soundtracks--the only music from XII that was his
was the stuff that went with the intro and load-game, and the vocal that
went with the end credits. FFXI-2's soundtrack wasn't very good either . . .
and similarly, not Uematsu's. Square really needs to find a better
replacement for him if he's not going to work on the FF series anymore.
