According to the Defense Department, July was the first month in which
more U.S. troops died in Afghanistan than in Iraq.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says there is still no plan to
send additional U.S. combat troops to Afghanistan, even though he has
said he would like to do so "sooner rather than later." VOA's Al
Pessin reports from the Pentagon.
Two weeks ago, Secretary Gates said officials were "working very hard"
to figure out which additional U.S. combat forces could be sent to
Afghanistan to deal with increased violence during the current summer
fighting season. At a news conference on Thursday, he said no such
forces have yet been identified, but he did not rule out getting
additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan before the fighting season ends.
"I'm just saying that we're still working through it and I haven't
received any recommendations yet from the chiefs [of the military
services] or from the Central Command commander," he said.

reported being sexually assaulted while in the military.
A government report indicates that the numbers could be even higher.
Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, spoke before a House panel investigating the
way the military handles reports of sexual assault.
She said she recently visited a Veterans Affairs hospital in the Los Angeles
area, where women told her horror stories of being raped in the military.

Presumptive GOP nominee John McCain
Moscow has said that US presidential hopeful John McCain should first be
elected then threaten to throw Russia out from the G8.
"We can afford to cut off relations with any of our partners if that's
what they want.... We're not interested in what [John] McCain has to say.
Let him become president first, then we'll listen to him," a senior
Russian diplomat told reporters on Tuesday, according to AFP...."

The battle for the White House took a nasty turn yesterday when John
McCain accused Barack Obama of "playing the race card".
While race surfaced earlier this year during Obama's contest with
Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, it had been absent from
McCain's fight with Obama.

Federal judge rules Bush aides can be subpoenaed
RAW STORY

Update: Pelosi says Rove contempt citation possible
President Bush's top advisers are not immune from congressional
subpoenas, a federal judge ruled Thursday in an unprecedented dispute
between the two political branches.
The House Judiciary Committee wants to question the president's chief
of staff, Josh Bolten, and former legal counsel Harriet Miers, about
the firing of nine U.S. attorneys. But President Bush says they are
immune from such subpoenas. They say Congress can't force them to
testify or turn over documents.
U.S. District Judge John Bates disagreed. He said there's no legal
basis for that argument. He said that Miers must appear before
Congress and, if she wants to refuse to testify, she must do so in
person.

From The Associated Press, 7/31/08:

Sept. 10 date set for oral arguments in Larry Craig appeal of Minn.
bathroom sting guilty plea
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _
Idaho Sen. Larry Craig will get his next day in Minnesota's courts on
Sept. 10.
That's the date for oral arguments on his attempt to withdraw his
guilty plea in a sex sting at the Minneapolis airport.
Craig was arrested last summer in a bathroom stall by an undercover
officer who said Craig solicited sex.
Craig pleaded guilty, but later said that was a mistake.
A Hennepin County judge refused to allow Craig to withdraw his plea.
Now a three-judge panel of the Minnesota Court of Appeals will
consider the Republican's case.
