Greenspan hits at critics over housing crisis

Alan Greenspan has hit back at critics who blame the Federal Reserve under
his leadership for causing the US housing bubble by keeping interest rates
too low for too long in the early 2000s, saying the evidence of any link
between monetary policy and the bubble was "statistically very fragile".

Writing in Monday's Financial Times, Mr Greenspan says he is "puzzled" why
so many commentators seek to explain the US housing bubble in terms of Fed
actions when many other economies with different central banks and different
monetary policies also saw rapid house price gains.

The former Fed chairman says the most likely cause of this global house
price boom was a "dramatic fall in real long term interest rates" around the
world, which he believes was caused by abundant global savings.

In any event, Mr Greenspan says, it is only with hindsight that it looks
like the US economic recovery was well enough entrenched before 2004 to
allow the Fed to start raising interest rates sooner than it did.

Bear Stearns rescue a 'turning point'

The US Federal Reserve's intervention in the fate of Bear Stearns, the Wall
Street investment bank, might have marked a "turning point" in the latest
financial market turmoil, according to Stanley Fischer, the governor of the
Bank of Israel.

Mr Fischer, who as first deputy managing director of the International
Monetary Fund played a central role in tackling the Asian and Russian
financial crises in the late 1990s, said that the Fed's action had calmed
the panic in the financial markets.

"It is not over. There will be more occasions when we think that the world
is going to go to hell in a handbasket. But for the first time since last
summer it is clear that the authorities are beginning to contain the
financial sector crisis in the US," Mr Fischer said in an interview with the
Financial Times.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A group of teenagers armed with baseball bats and
machetes attacked Australian teachers and students on Monday, injuring
18 people and forcing a high school in Sydney to be locked down,
police said.

Five youths barged into the morning assembly at Merrylands High School
in south-west Sydney, witnesses said, grabbing students before
starting to smash windows at the school.

The school then locked its students in classrooms as the youths, who
were not students, went through two school buildings, smashing more
windows and equipment, police said.

"They caused a considerable amount of damage," a police spokesman told
reporters. "There have been some assaults. But there are no serious
injuries as a result of those assaults."

One of the world's leading climate scientists warns today that the EU
and its international partners must urgently rethink targets for
cutting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because of fears they have
grossly underestimated the scale of the problem.

In a startling reappraisal of the threat, James Hansen, head of the
Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, calls for a
sharp reduction in C02 limits.

I noted that Harold Burton's posts bear resemblances to Moffitt-the
repeated use of "snicker" minus the "%%%%%%%%%%" and a tendency to back up
claims with links that never address those claims. I kill filed Moffitt
some time ago but a google search of posts from both of them today shows
they both accessed the net from an Earthlink POP in Nashville and posted
via giganews and the headers show them both using the same newsreader
and software.

hope no one will read it strategy now emulated by vallely. In the past
Moffitt backed up some claims as follows:
