In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop
By MATT RICHTEL

SAN FRANCISCO — They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are
paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the
digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.

A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed
with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling
under great physical and emotional stress created by the
around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of
news and comment.

Of course, the bloggers can work elsewhere, and they profess a love of
the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media
outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are
starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few
months, two among their ranks have died suddenly.

Charlton Heston, Epic Film Star and N.R.A. Leader, Dies at 83

Published: April 6, 2008

Charlton Heston, who appeared in some 100 films in his 60-year acting
career but who is remembered chiefly for his monumental, jut-jawed
portrayals of Moses, Ben-Hur and Michelangelo, died Saturday night at
his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 83.

His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the family, Bill Powers,
who declined to discuss the cause. In August 2002, Mr. Heston
announced that he had been diagnosed with neurological symptoms
“consistent with Alzheimer’s disease.”

“I’m neither giving up nor giving in,” he said.

Every actor dreams of a breakthrough role, the part that stamps him in
the public memory, and Mr. Heston’s life changed forever when he
caught the eye of the director Cecil B. De Mille. De Mille, who was
planning his next biblical spectacular, “The Ten Commandments,” looked
at the young, physically imposing Mr. Heston and saw his Moses.

Bush Administration Memo Says Fourth Amendment Does Not Apply To
Military Operations Within U.S. (4/2/2008)

ACLU Calls For Immediate Release Of Withheld Legal Memo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK – A newly disclosed secret memo authored by the Department of
Justice's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) in March 2003 that asserts
President Bush has unlimited power to order brutal interrogations of
detainees also reveals a radical interpretation of the Constitution's
Fourth Amendment protection from unreasonable search and seizure. The
memo, declassified yesterday as the result of an American Civil
Liberties Union lawsuit, cites a still-secret DOJ memo from 2001 that
found that the "Fourth Amendment had no application to domestic
military operations."

Now I can peel that gun outta his cold... dead... hand.
Will Bush show up drunk, pawing his casket like he did Reagan's?

Putsch has kindly offered to send more troops into Afghanistan
– a "significant" number, above and beyond the 31,000 already there.
Given that the only real differences between Afghanistan and Iraq are
those of scale, and the fact that America still has a few allies in
Afghanistan, this is discouraging news.

Even more disturbing is the fact that Putsch made this
commitment for 2009, when he will have left office.

In short, he has made a commitment that is likely to blow up
in the face of the next president by tying him to a losing cause.
