I am somewhat relieved to finally see an example of Israeli jews critical of
jewish policy as it pertains to the West Bank and Gaza. Clearly there are at
least some critics and according to the CBC documentary from the Passionate
Eye "Raised to be Heroes", the number proclaimed is 1600 and growing.
"...There are more than 1,600 "refuseniks" in Israel and this number is
growing. Many Israelis condemn them for failing their nation; however they
stand by their principles in the hopes of ending Israel's military action in
the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Through a series of emotional testimonials,
Raised to Be Heroes documents a group of "refuseniks" as they recount the
moment when they finally drew the line..."
http://www.cbc.ca/passionateeyemonday/feature_010408.html
It should be noted that the documentary shows Israeli news clips and the
debate is internal. Now, where are the equivalent voices from the west?
Without a doubt, the responsibility lies with some indefinable element or
elements within the jewish community but in North America, as far as main
stream media goes, we hear scarcely little of any such opposition to policy.
This IMO is counter-productive to the Israeli cause.

States consider releasing inmates early
Budget crunch may lead lawmakers to free prisoners early
Associated Press
Friday, April 4, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Lawmakers from California to Kentucky are trying to save
money with a drastic and potentially dangerous budget-cutting proposal:
releasing tens of thousands of convicts from prison, including drug addicts,
thieves and even violent criminals.
Officials acknowledge that the idea carries risks, but they say they have no
choice because of huge budget gaps brought on by the slumping economy.
"If we don't find a way to better manage the population at the state prison,
we will be forced to spend money to expand the state's prison system --
money we don't have," said Jeff Neal, a spokesman for Rhode Island Gov. Don
Carcieri.
At least eight states are considering freeing inmates or sending some
convicts to rehabilitation programs instead of prison, according to an
Associated Press analysis of legislative proposals. If adopted, the early
release programs could save an estimated $450 million in California and
Kentucky alone.

Hillary Counting on Gullible Voters
Apr 04, 2008
What worked for P.T. Barnum didn't do as well for Sen. Hillary
Clinton. When the great showman said, "Nobody ever went broke
underestimating the intelligence of the American people," he unknowingly
anticipated the fundamental assumption that underlay the campaign of the
first woman seriously to contend for the presidency. But however correct
Barnum's observations may have been about the circus audiences of years ago,
it has proven a flawed premise for a 21st century presidential campaign.

McCain Gives Unvarnished View of His Past
By LAURA MECKLER
April 5, 2008; Page A4
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- John McCain spent an unconventional week on the campaign
trail, starting with memories of a rebellious youth and capped by an
appearance Friday before a somewhat hostile African-American crowd gathered
to remember Martin Luther King Jr.
Candidates usually try to cast their lives in a glossy sheen, and set their
speeches before friendly audiences. But the Arizona senator spent the past
few days frequently doing the opposite.
He was barely audible at the King event, over a driving rain and murmuring
crowd. His speaking style was staid compared with the other speakers, giving
his appearance an awkward quality.
"Martin Luther King Jr. was not a man to flinch from harsh truth, and the
same is required of all who come here to see where he was in the last hours
of his life," Sen. McCain said, standing beneath the balcony at the Lorraine
Motel, where Dr. King was shot 40 years ago Friday. "We look up to that
balcony, we remember that night, and we are still left with a feeling of
loss."

Below is an excruciatingly boring twenty-minute speech by a NOBODY
named Evan Sayet. If you can stomach it, watch him make inferences
with the sliding scale in his perceptions of reality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaE98w1KZ-c
Here is my response to the Smith29, who turned me on to the video,
and, although I quickly realized he was being a smart aleck, decided
to watch the whole thing, because the right way to form opinions and
beliefs is to listen to all sides of the story:
No, that's not a very good video. You see what I, a Liberal, did
there? I DISCRIMINATED. Whoops. I just made a liar outta Evan
Sayet, whom, I might add, is not only a NOBODY, but not funny as
well...

Global temperatures 'to decrease'
By Roger Harrabin
BBC News environment analyst
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7329799.stm
Global temperatures will drop slightly this year as a result of the
cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN
meteorologists have said.
The World Meteorological Organization's secretary-general, Michel
Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into
the summer.
This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998,
prompting some to question climate change theory.
But experts say we are still clearly in a long-term warming trend -
and they forecast a new record high temperature within five years.
The WMO points out that the decade from 1998 to 2007 was the warmest
on record. Since the beginning of the 20th Century, the global average
surface temperature has risen by 0.74C.
While Nasa, the US space agency, cites 2005 as the warmest year, the
UK's Hadley Centre lists it as second to 1998.

GOP Congressman Calls Soldier in Iraq "Two-Bit Security Guard"
http://firedoglake.com/2008/04/04/gop-congressman-considers-soldiers-in-iraq-two.../
Yellow elephant Patrick McHenry (R-NC) spent the night in the pool
house at one of Sadaam's palaces. When he wanted to go to the gym and
a soldier asked him for ID, McHenry referred to him as "a two-bit
security guard."
I don't know what's more offensive, McHenry's sense of entitlement,
his disregard for the very people who are protecting him in a
dangerous situation, or his disrespect for those he sends to die in a
war he's not willing to fight himself.

Watch the video. It's repellent on so many levels, it's hard to know
where to start.
