How McCain Lost in Pennsylvania
By FRANK RICH
Published: April 27, 2008

IT’S a nightmare. It’s the Bataan Death March. It’s mutually assured
Armageddon. “Both of them are already losing the general to John
McCain,” declared a Newsweek columnist last month, predicting that the
election “may already be over” by the time the Democrats anoint a
nominee.

Not so fast. If we’ve learned any new rule in the 2008 campaign, it’s
this: Once our news culture sets a story in stone, chances are it will
crumble. But first it must be recycled louder and louder 24/7, as if
sheer repetition will transmute conventional wisdom into reality.

When the Pennsylvania returns rained down Tuesday night, the narrative
became clear fast. The Democrats’ exit polls spelled disaster: Some 25
percent of the primary voters said they would defect to Mr. McCain or
not vote at all if Barack Obama were the nominee. How could the party
possibly survive this bitter, perhaps race-based civil war?

Sherri Mathis was convicted on March 4 in the death of 6-year-old
Cheyenne Delp.

"There was justice for Cheyenne today and that is what I promised my
baby, justice. She got it today," said Cheyenne Delp's mother, Roxanne Haga.

As the sentence was handed down in court, it was hard for Cheyenne's
mother to hold back her emotions.

"I've been waiting for this for so long. I miss my daughter so much,"
said Haga.

Mathis was a foster mother to Cheyenne and her two older brothers while
they lived with her at her Warren County home.

Special Needs Child
A woman accused in the beating death of a 23-month-old foster child
under her care must stand trial on murder and assault charges, a judge
ruled Wednesday.

Linda Faye Coleman, 48, is charged in the death last June of Malachi
McBride-Roberts, who was just shy of his second birthday.

San Diego County Deputy Medical Examiner Beth Ann Schaber testified
during a daylong preliminary hearing that the victim died of blunt force
trauma to the head, consistent with inflicted trauma.

During the child's autopsy, Schaber noted trauma to the toddler's head,
torso and extremities.

The victim had at least 29 different impact areas on his head and
hemorrhaging under his scalp, Schaber said.

Under questioning from defense attorney Brian Watkins, Schaber said the
child's injuries could not have been caused by a normal fall.

State withheld records on abused boy, suit says

EVERETT -- The state has illegally withheld records about how social
workers handled abuse allegations involving a young boy who nearly
starved to death last year, according to a civil lawsuit filed Thursday
against the state Department of Social and Health Services.

Shayne Abegg, now 5, was removed from his father's south Everett
apartment in 2007 after he was found severely malnourished. The boy
could barely walk and his hair was falling out when police found him.
His father, Danny Abegg, recently was sentenced to 8 years in prison for
starving Shayne. The man's girlfriend, Marilea Mitchell, also was
sentenced to 8 years behind bars.

Seattle attorney David Moody alleges that the state has failed to turn
over thousands of documents he requested under the state's public
records laws. He requested the documents in December and has received
only a fraction of the records the state has about its involvement with
Shayne, according to the lawsuit filed in Snohomish County Superior Court.

Welfare worker accused of stealing nearly $75,000

http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20080418/NEWS01/768046186&news01ad=1

By Diana Hefley, Herald Writer

LYNNWOOD -- A former state employee entrusted to help the poor has been
arrested for allegedly stealing almost $75,000 meant for welfare clients.

As a financial services specialist, Richard N. Hartline, 30, opened
accounts and authorized funds for people who applied for medical, food
and financial assistance from the State Department of Social and Health
Services.

Detectives believe Hartline opened bogus accounts, withdrew the cash and
kept the money, according to court documents. Investigators found
evidence that Hartline fraudulently authorized $74,599 to be deposited
into 11 fake accounts between December 2005 and September 2006.

"He was able to circumvent the checks and balances," Washington State
Patrol detective Charles Sletten said. "He found a glitch in the system."
