"Governor Charlie Crist received your e-mail concerning the
Legislature's action that apologizes for slavery, an action that he
supports.Governor Crist believes that the United States of America is
the greatest nation on Earth and is a shining example for others to
follow. While our history contains mostly positive examples of liberty
and freedom, there are a few instances where we were wrong. Slavery
is one of those instances.
Another was placing Japanese-Americans in camps during World War II.
In Florida, the burning of the entire town of Rosewood in 1923 was a
cruel act that included a massacre of local residents.
The Governor's comments surrounding the apology for slavery are fully
consistent with his belief in America. He agreed with President
Ronald Reagan when the President signed a measure apologizing for
taking away the freedoms of Japanese-Americans - many of whom were
American
citizens. By the act of Congress and President Reagan, those still
living received compensation for the loss of their rights.
