WASHINGTON (AP) — Roughly one in every five U.S. troops who have
survived the bombs and other dangers of Iraq and Afghanistan now suffers
from major depression or post-traumatic stress, an independent study
said Thursday. It estimated the toll at 300,000 or more.

As many or more report possible brain injuries from explosions or other
head wounds, said the study, the first major survey from outside the
government.

  Bloomberg: NEXT__PRESIDENT__WILL_BE__AN__ADULT

In making a decision about whom to endorse, Bloomberg said he is not
trying to decide which one of the three matches up with him
ideologically, but he added that he wants to know which one is "willing
to face reality and say, 'We can’t have everything, and there are costs
and we’ve got to make choices.'"

"Some of the things they’ll be in favor of, I’ll agree with. Some of the
things they’ll be in favor of, I won’t. *But at least we’ll have an*
*adult in office* who can lead and accomplish something."

Just how bad was Barack Obama's debate performance last night?

Just how bad was Barack Obama's debate performance last night? Not
as bad as Britney Spears' song-and-dance routine at the MTV Awards.
Not as bad as Bill Buckner's legendary error during the '86 World
Series. Not as bad as Bob Dylan's music during his God phase. Not as
bad as John Travolta's Scientology cinema experiment in Battlefield
Earth. Not as bad as Mike Dukakis' fateful ride in a military tank.

In other words, Obama could have done worse. Neverthless, if he
still harbors any hopes of driving Hillary Clinton from the Democratic
race by scoring an upset victory in Pennsylvania, he might be wise to
get real. It's hard to imagine that he won over the working-class,
culturally-conservative Democrats who constitute the swing vote; if
anything, his performance during the first 45 minutes of the debate
may well have cemented their suspicions.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A typhoon bearing down on the southern Chinese
resort island of Hainan on Friday is the earliest to threaten the
region in decades and may well be the strongest, state media said.

Hainan and the neighboring province of Guangdong were braced for
Typhoon Neoguri, the first of the year, with almost 22,000 fishing
boats called back to harbor as the storm skirted Vietnam.

Clinging to a Stereotype

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: April 18, 2008

Will Barack Obama’s now famous “bitter” quote turn out to have been a
big deal politically? Frankly, I have no idea.

But here’s a different question: was Mr. Obama right?

Mr. Obama’s comments combined assertions about economics, sociology
and voting behavior. In each case, his assertion was mostly if not
entirely wrong.

Start with the economics. Mr. Obama: “You go into these small towns in
Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs
have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they
fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration.”

There are, indeed, towns where the mill closed during the 1980s and
nothing has replaced it. But the suggestion that the American
heartland suffered equally during the Clinton and Bush years is deeply
misleading.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Firefighters have gained control of a fire that
destroyed 10 rowhouses in New Brunswick, N.J.

New Brunswick Fire Chief Robert Rawls said 38 people were evacuated from the
homes Wednesday morning. He said one child was treated on the scene for
smoke inhalation and another person was brought to Robert Wood Johnson
University Hospital as a precaution.

Rawls said the fire began about 7 a.m. A cause hasn't been determined.

Town spokesman Bill Bray said the rowhouses were 70 to 80 years old.
