Um well, the truth is a little more "interesting". The Taliban did
not escape. Large numbers of Taliban were airlifted out of the
combat zone by (drumroll please) ....... the US military.

Just another hinky situation inside of the current Greek tragedy,
courtesy of the US government.

Drug smuggling, nuclear black market, 9/11, Turkey, Israel and Bush.
If this government represents you, you're living in the twilight
zone.

  Groundhog Day

This year, Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address fall on
the same day.

It's an ironic juxtaposition: One involves a meaningless ritual in
which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication.

The other involves a groundhog.

You want higher taxes? For this government?

You want higher taxes? For this government?
VIN SUPRYNOWICZ

A reader writes in:

"In response to a recent editorial, entitled 'Higher gasoline taxes?'
that stated that because 'family paychecks barely cover basics, the
money [needed to repair our country's crumbing infrastructure should
come from] somewhere else.' What could this 'somewhere else' be? ...
Is the Review-Journal advocating higher Federal income taxes, or a new
national sales tax, or new toll road like user fees to pay for this?
Also, how would higher withholding or sales taxes or higher user fees
put more money in the pocket of the U.S. consumer? However defined,
'somewhere else' is just cost shifting."

Aside from noting the inappropriate capitalization of the word
"Federal," above, the way one might capitalize the word "God," does
anyone else notice a whole category of places omitted, where the
central government could quickly and easily "get the money"?

36,000 Canadians Applied To Join Armed Forces In 2008

Author: Kurt

This factoid appeared in Canada's "National Post" newspaper yesterday.
Not all of these applicants would have been accepted, of course, in
that the qualifications for military service in all three branches,
army, navy and air force are now relatively high, educationally,
morally and physically.

What it does show is that Canada is gradually moving from a more
"feminine" political character to being more masculine like the U.S.

Some People Never Learn

Someone once said "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing
over and over again and expecting a different result each time." I
paraphrase slightly but the message holds. Nowhere is this more true
than in politics. Since Plato penned the Republic people have ignored
reality and thought up of perfect socities where all the troubles that
people have are done away with.

In todays world we find two very large groups of people that believe
that if they just have their way the world will be a better place for
it. Socialists(and their more die hard brothers, communists) have been
at it for over a century. Just allow them to run the economy, let them
try their crazed scheme and all will be well in the world. It has been
tried, that's the problem. It's been tried in Europe, in the former
USSR, in Cuba, in China, in Vietnam, in North Korea, and in countless
other countries.

The Liberals' Mommy Fascism
By Christopher Chantrill

At the end of the Bush administration conservatives need to clear
their heads and think about the future. It's time to do some serious
political philosophy. Jonah Goldberg believes that the way to start is
to understand how ubiquitous fascist ideas have become in our present
age.

A project like that runs immediately into the problem, first
articulated by George Orwell right after World War II, that the word
"fascism" no longer refers to the specific movement founded by Benito
Mussolini. It has become merely a handy pejorative. For half a
century the left has used the word to define themselves as the good
guys and anyone that opposed them as the fascist bad guys.
