But we do this all the time!
"...Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke called the staged briefing "totally unacceptable," adding, "While it is an isolated incident, that does not make it any more tolerable." He said reprimands are "very probable." FEMA is part of DHS.
"Trying to manipulate the press and the public will only tarnish their [FEMA's] current success," House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said.
--->Philbin's last scheduled day at FEMA was Thursday. He has been named as the new head of public affairs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, ODNI spokeswoman Vanee Vines said. .."

Carbon catastrophe
Kyoto causes rainforest cutting and food-price hikes
Lawrence Solomon
Financial Post
Friday, October 19, 2007
http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/comment/story.html?id=4ef9edf4-137c...
Four environmental catastrophes loom large, all due to sweeping
changes to the world economy in the wake of the Kyoto Treaty.
The first is the threat to the world's forests, especially old-growth
forests which do not soak up carbon from the atmosphere. By seizing
these forests, cutting them down, and converting them to
carbon-intensive plantations, Third World governments and their
cronies can cash in on carbon credits, to the dismay of the old-growth
forests' inhabitants. As expressed in a Declaration by the Forest
Peoples Programme, a gathering of tribal peoples in India's North
Eastern Region of Guwahati in 2003, "The climate change debate has
turned forests into a carbon commodity, which will have to provide
carbon credits for a lucrative carbon market that will allow
industrialized countries to continue emitting greenhouse gases."

German environmentalists say freed minks will die
Mon Oct 29, 12:46 PM ET
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071029/sc_afp/germanyanimalsenvironment
BERLIN (AFP) - German conservationists on Monday condemned the freeing
of some 17,000 minks from a fur farm, apparently by animal rights
activists, saying they would starve in the wild.
"It was a political act, and it has nothing to do with protecting the
environment," said Joern Ehlers from the German chapter of the World
Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
"These animals are going to die of hunger."
Minks are carnivores who feed on small animals and those freed from
the farm in Grabow, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Berlin,
risked disturbing the ecological balance in the region, he said.
Thomas Pietsch from animal conservation group "Vier Pfote" (Four Paws)
agreed, describing the move as "silliness".
"These American minks are going to upset the balance of the eco
system. They will not be able to survive because they have not learnt
to hunt and will end up crushed by cars," he told AFP.

Police investigate extortion attempt against state lawmaker
SPOKANE --
Spokane Police confirm they are investigating an alleged extortion
attempt against a Washington State lawmaker.
But the story is much more complicated than that.
Spokane Police are investigating an alleged extortion attempt against
Washington State Rep. Richard Curtis.
Rep. Richard Curtis was in Spokane last week attending a retreat with
other republican lawmakers to discuss the upcoming legislative
session.
Detectives tell KREM 2 News at some point Thursday Curtis had a sexual
encounter with a man, who police have not identified.
A Spokane Police Dept. spokesperson says Curtis and the man were
spotted at several locations across the city that evening.
The next day, someone filed a police report alleging that Curtis was
being extorted.

One site that will miss its deadline by years is the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory in Tennessee, which holds a large stock of
weapons-usable uranium.
The laboratory plans to dilute the uranium, but that will take until
2015, the auditors found.
Two other sites that will miss their deadlines are operated by the
National Nuclear Security Administration, which is responsible for
weapons security.
The agency was established in 1999 after a number of security breaches
in the weapons complex, and in January its director was forced to
resign because of other security lapses.
