LAND OF ALWAYS NIGHT

Author: Dave

From 1935, one of the early Bantam reprints, and already out in double
reprints -- this one has it all!

Truly classic DOC -- a weird murder, a weird semi-human, and a weird
scheme soon involve DOC in an adventure to the very ends of the Earth.

This one is noted for some of the great bad guys ever in DOC. There's
Ool, being from another civilization, white-faced purveyor of the
butterfly death. "Watches" Bowen. brandy sipping criminal genius,
with his obsession for time pieces. And Hamhock Piney, the massive
Georgia Negro, Honey Hamilton, the mild-mannered killer, and Squirrel,
the cowardly explosives man,

All five of DOC's guys are on hand. The pig is here, but he actually
helps the plot along.

Before you know it, we've left NYC by dirigible for the wastes of the
Arctic Ocean, and before you know it there's a strange underground
civiliazation, with the inevitable beautiful princess, and a wild
fight to the finish.

Minor quibbles -- this degenerates quickly into the monk and Ham
show. Long tom and Renny do very little, and in an underground cave/
strange ciovilization sceanario, Johnny does virtually nothing.

I did like this one, despite some quibbles. Here's my review from a few
years ago:

The new DOC reprints (love them) raise the question to me about the
original cover art.

Compare any DOC pulp with the subsequent paperback, and the paperback
cover almost always wins. With the pulps we get DOC in a short-
sleeved shirt climbing something, or making fists and staring off into
the middle distance.

The cover sells the magazine. I know pulp cover artists did not have
a tremendous amount of time, but still -- look at what else was being
done at the time. Put DOC up against the other hero pulps, and it's
no contest.

Question; was this a strategy? There's very little about the cover
of most DOC pulps to upset your mother, or your homeroom teacher.
They see you with a SPIDER or a G8, and they'd wonder what kind of
crap you were reading, but most DOC covers are pretty "safe".

I was wrong -- not always a white short cleeved shirt, but often the
sleeve rolled up (or shredded) on a long=sleeve shirt. And upcoming
reprint #16

give us DOC climbing in a white short sleeve shirt, with the stylish
red sweater vest. Nothing says action like a sweater vest.

(T Guy):

I think the sweater vest - or tank top as we call them on this side of
the Atlantic - must be what the ghosts are giggling about. I would be
if I were a ghost up against the Man of Bronze.
