Ethical Money Question

Author: Leslie
Date: May 4, 2008 18:50

Kim and I went Garage saling over the weekend. My teen girls need
jeans but neither were with me. So, every pair of jeans I came across
from size 2 to 9, I bought. About 7 pair of jeans all together. Total
investment: around $21. My 14 year old needed jeans the most, so she
had first dibs. There were 2 pair that fit. My 17 year old just tried
some on and found $21 in a pocket- I made her hand it over. She's
pissed. What do you think I shoul have done?

It's not clear if you made her return the money to you, the 14-year
old or to the person you bought the jeans from. I vote for the person
you bought the jeans from, or if that's not feasible, donate the money
to a good cause. No one else has the right to that money, so if you
don't agree with returning the money, finders keepers.

Take the money back to the place you bought the jeans.

Finders, keepers, man. If, between the original owner, you, your 14
year old, and your 17 year old, only one of you was clever enough to
check the pockets, why penalize your older daughter? Although in the
interests of family harmony, I'd suggest she split it with her younger
sister.

The money should go back to whoever sold you the jeans, if you know who
that is. But it sounds likely that you don't. In that case. Daughter
should be allowed to keep the money. She's the one that found it. If my
mom had made me turn the money over, I'd have learned an important
lesson from that. Don't tell Mom anything. Hide as much as you can from
her.

You did the right thing.

Oops, accidentally sent before finishing. You did the right thing.
That is assuming you are returning the money to the person you bought
the jeans from. If you don't know which sale you bought them at then I
suppose you should leave the decision about what to do with the money
to the daughter who found it.

Bad move! That money was hers to keep. And isn't she the one you
have been having problems with?
