Cattle mutilation?

Paul Harvey, Jr. was talking about cattle mutilation all over the
world and how to this day, there is no explanation. "Now that's
news".
I thought it was a hoax from the early nineties. Maybe that was crop
circles.
I'm a little stunned that this topic made the Paul Harvey news show...

I think that Paul Harvey and "Dear Abbey" combined would represent the
single largest vector of urban legends in the english-speaking world.

I read a plausible explanation many years ago (and no, I don't have a
cite).

It went something like this:

- Farmers insure their livestock against accidental death.

- A cow simply found dead in the pasture doesn't pay off, a mutilated
carcass might.

- Occurrences of mutilations follow geopolitical boundaries,
specifically the boundaries of areas covered by individual insurance
adjusters.

Paul Harvey is probably behind the curve on the cattle mutilation
story. Instead, he should devote air time to the movement to put
pants on horses.

Brace yourself, because the shocking truth is...cattle mutilations are
not a hoax! (Cue thunder and lightning)

Yes, there is documented evidence that strange creatures have been going
around cutting up helpless cattle with surgical precision and removing
body parts.

Said strange creatures are commonly called "birds," more specifically
vultures and crows. The surgically precise instruments they used were
their beaks; the cattle were helpless because they were dead. The body
parts removed were eaten.

There's an excellent book on the subject: "Mute Evidence," by Ian
Summers and Daniel Kagan (Bantam Books, 1984). Summers and Kagan crossed
the country interviewing witnesses and 'experts' and discovered...

I remember it as a craze from the early EIGHTIES. Haven't heard
anything since 85 or so.

I first heard of it in 1976, when a classmate brought it up during the
current events discussion in high-school history class. He wanted to
discuss the new top-secret silent helicopters the air-force was said to
have developed, and their relationship to the aforementioned cattle.

"Noiseless helicopters and mutilated cattle? They MUST be related!"
