The Rowland Fire is being managed by Twin Falls, Idaho, Bureau of Land
Management.

The estimated 42,000-acre Hepworth Complex consists of the Hepworth Fire
(36,376 acres) approximately 10 miles northwest of Wells, Nevada and the

the residents of Jarbidge for their cooperation with last night's

a threat to the area and today's weather will dictate the residents' return

Fire crews in northern Nevada are battling more than two dozen fires that
have burned nearly 200 square miles of rangeland and timber, including one
that continues to pose a threat to hundreds of homes on the edge of Reno.

No injuries have been reported and no evacuations have been ordered today.
But 400 homes in southwest Reno remain on alert due to gusty erratic winds
fanning the 1,800-acre fire that is burning in protected wilderness in a
national forest on the Sierra's eastern front northeast of Lake Tahoe.

Many of the other lightning-sparked fires are burning north and south of US
Interstate 80 in north central and northeast Nevada. The interstate was
closed off-and-on last night due to heavy smoke in several places between
Winnemucca and Wells.

Jamie Thompson of the US Bureau of Land Management in Winnemucca may have
put it best. He says, quoting now, "In a sense you feel like we're under
assault from Mother Nature right now."

The biggest blaze in the state, the Kelly Creek fire, has burned nearly 80
square miles of mostly federal rangeland about 30 miles north of Winnemucca.

The pilot of a small airtanker escaped serious injury when his aircraft
crashed last night while attacking another 3,000-acre fire about 15 miles
south of Winnemucca.

In Reno, 400 firefighters are being aided by eight helicopters and five
airtankers dropping water and retardant on the Hawken fire, which forced
hundreds of evacuations when it broke out Monday afternoon, burning up to
the backyards of numerous homes.

The blaze flared up again as winds picked up Tuesday afternoon, then died
down in the evening. Fire managers are reporting progress today. They
estimated the fire to be five percent contained but they are bracing for a
similar scenario later in the day with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour
possible.

Fire engines are positioned to protect homes in southwest Reno on the
northern and eastern fronts of the fire. Hand crews are digging fire lines
on the fire's western and southern flanks in the Humboldt Toiyabe National
Forest between the city and Lake Tahoe.

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons attended a dawn briefing for firefighters at
McQueen High School this morning and praised their efforts.
