Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Tuesday confirmed that Douglas L. Barry is his
choice to lead the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Barry, a 31-year department veteran who's been interim fire chief since Jan.
1, would be the first Black to helm the LAFD in its 121-year history. His
appointment still must be confirmed by the City Council.
He has headed the department, which has about 3,590 uniformed personnel, on
an interim basis since William Bamattre stepped down Jan. 1.

Brush Fire Rages In Hacienda Heights

Flames tore their way through about 50 acres of brush Tuesday in the hills
of Hacienda Heights, crawling through dense vegetation and advancing toward
about 50 homes, forcing evacuations, authorities said.
More than 300 firefighters were on the scene of the blaze, which began in
roughly the 4000 block of Turnbull Canyon Road at about 13:00 PDT

Lightning Starts Brush Fire In San Jacinto Mountains
IDYLLWILD, California

A lightning-triggered brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the San
Jacinto Mountains northeast of Idyllwild scorched 50 to 80 acres and
destroyed several buildings in a long-abandoned campground, authorities
said.
The "Snow Fire" in the San Bernardino National Forest started at about noon
after vegetation smoldering from a recent lightning strike turned into a
full-fledged blaze.
By 17:00 PDT. the fire was 10 percent contained.
