Trooper who stopped to aid motorist is shot and killed

WABASH, Indiana -- An Indiana state trooper who stopped to help a motorist
was shot and killed by the man, who then reloaded a shotgun and killed
himself.

Master Trooper David Rich was killed Thursday along US 24, about 40 miles
southwest of Fort Wayne. The gunman, Joseph Vultaggio, Jr, was from Michigan
and authorities say he was driving a SUV his father had reported stolen
Wednesday.

Rich was an 18-year veteran of the Indiana state police. He leaves behind a
wife and three small children.
