ILLINOIS: 2 Die in Lincoln Park High-Rise Fire
By Gerry Doyle
January 26, 2007 19:07 PM PST

2 people were killed and 3 hurt when a fire erupted on the 26th floor
of a Lincoln Park high-rise tonight.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Raymond Orozco said the blaze in the 42-
story building at 2626 N. Lakeview Avenue was reported in a 911 call
at 18:15. Firefighters found flames blowing from the unit's windows,
but had the fire extinguished within 20 minutes, Orozco said.

An man in his 60s found in the burning apartment and an 87-year-old
woman living below were taken in "extremely critical" condition to St.
Joseph Hospital and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where
they died later.

Two residents were in fair condition, and a firefighter had minor
injuries, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

"We had a heavy fire that consumed the apartment on the 26th floor,"
Orozco said. "And then we were dealing with heavy winds, which made it
difficult for the firefighters."
