Fires During Western States' Heat Wave
Evacuations and Highway Closures

NEVADA
Hundreds of people in Winnemucca - 17 miles east of Reno - were ordered to
leave their homes Saturday night because of an 8,000-acre wildfire, one of
more than a dozen blazes that charred a combined 55 square miles in northern
Nevada.
BLM reported the fire threatened 8 blocks of homes and an electrical
substation.

BLM stated the largest of the Nevada fires burned 23,000 acres along the
Idaho border. 10%% contained Saturday. A firefighter with burns was treated
at and released from a hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Another fire blackened 7,000 acres 5 miles SW of Carlin. 2 mobile homes
destroyed, several smaller structures damaged. I-80 closed 6 hours
overnight. 40%% contained Saturday AM.

A Nevada fire 30 milses S of Elko started by lightning Saturday.
Threatening structures -- evacuation of campers.

UTAH
160,000-acre wildfire 120 miles S of Salt Lake City jumped the highway.
Started by lightning Friday PM -- being pushed N & W Saturday by high winds
100-mile stretch of I-15 in central Utah closed
Evacuation of Cove Fort and Blundell Geo Thermal Power Plant.
1 or more vacation homes and 6 other buildings destroyed at Cove Fort
I-70 also closed in Richfield. Extreme smoke conditions -- 5-car pile up
& crash killed a motorcycle driver & his passenger when struck from behind
by a car.

CALIFORNIA
400+ firefighters -- fire burned 17,000 acres in Inyo NF east of Yosemite
National Park.
Hikers and backpackers on trail to Mount Whitney evacuated.
Town of Independence 200 evacuated
US Highway 395 closed
Campgrounds and a lodge had been evacuated.

SoCal a wildfire burned 6,300 acres in Los Padres National Forest
Campgrounds, ranches & 100-year-old historic Manzana schoolhouse threatened

IDAHO
Wood River Valley and Boise residents warned of electrical failures after a
wildfire damaged dozens of power poles Friday
-- 1 fall on a substation and
destroyed a transformer.

MONTANA
It's too hot to fish.
Yellowstone National Park -- anglers not to fish between noon and 1800.
