Arson Suspected As 500 Flee Hawaii Fires
Officials: No Homes Damaged, No One Injured

HONOLULU -- In Hawaii, hundreds are fleeing inland from suspected arson
fires burning along the coast of the Big Island.
Officials said no homes have been damaged and no one has been injured, but
there are concerns the fires could approach residential areas with a change
of wind.
Nine fires appear to have been set in dry grasses along coastal roads early
Sunday. The evacuation order affected an estimated 500 people.

Big Island Brush Fires Prompt Evacuation

SOUTH KOHALA -- About eight brush fires broke out in South Kohala early
Sunday morning. Multiple units are on scene, battling the flames.
There are two on Waikoloa Road, two on Queen Kaahumanu near Puako, two on
Kawaihae Road, and two on Akoni Pule Highway. The first fire was reported at
3:20 Sunday morning and the last at 4:14. Fire officials have ordered
mandatory evacuations from hundreds of residents as a precautionary measure
due to smoke hazards. No homes were damaged and are not in any immediate
danger.

Residents Allowed to Return After Fire Evacuation

Big Island firefighters are gaining ground against eight suspicious brush
fires that have burned more than 2,000 acres. Three major fires are still
burning.
An estimated 400 people who were evacuated Sunday morning from the Puako
community were allowed to return to their homes. No homes were damaged.
One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
