Russia Seizes Arsenal Of US Weapons In Georgia - Military

MOSCOW (AFP)--Russian forces have seized a "large arsenal" of U.S.-made
weapons in the western Georgian city of Senaki including hundreds of assault
rifles, a military spokesman said Friday.

"In Senaki, we seized a large arsenal of weapons including 664 U.S.-made
M-16 rifles" and a number of M-40 sniper rifles, General Anatoly Nogovitsyn
told a news conference in Moscow. "There were 1,728 weapons total."

16/08/08 "ICH" -- - There are no military installations in the city of
Tskhinvali. In fact, there are no military targets at all. It is an
industrial center consisting of lumber mills, manufacturing plants and
residential areas. It is also the home to 30,000 South Ossetians. When
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili ordered the city to be bombed by
warplanes and shelled by heavy artillery last Thursday, he knew that he
would be killing hundreds of civilians in their homes and neighborhoods. But
he ordered the bombing anyway.

There was no "Battle of Tskhinvali"; that's another fiction. A battle
implies that there is an opposing force that is resisting or fighting back.
That's not the case here. The Georgian army entered the city unopposed;
after all, how can unarmed civilians stop armed units. Most of the
townspeople had already fled across the border into Russia or hid in their
basements while the tanks and armored vehicles rumbled bye firing at
anything that moved.

Has the US Secretary of State got her cassette stuck? For a week now she has
been reiterating the same phrase "Russian forces must leave Georgia now" and
for a week now the world has been informed of Georgian war crimes against
Russians in Ossetia. The war crimes happened, the Russians call the shots
now, Ms. Rice. Like it or lump it.

Is Condoleeza Rice stupid? OK her boss is, we all know that and that's why
nobody pays any attention to what he says or if they do, it is to have a
good laugh at how such an imbecile could supposedly rule the roost in
Washington (when everyone knows it is Cheney and his energy and arms
lobbies). So Bush gets a discount, like the uncle that farts at family
dinners, like the retarded nephew who belches swearwords after his third
litre of Coke, like the simpleton that sits outside the church on Sundays
begging for money informing everyone that he is an astronaut on Thursday
afternoons.

DEBKAfile's military sources report Moscow's planned retaliation for
America's missile interceptors in Poland and US-Israeli military aid to
Georgia may come in the form of installing Iskandar surface missiles in
Syria and its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.

Russian Baltic and Middle East warships, submarines and long-range bombers
may be armed with nuclear warheads, according to Sunday newspapers in
Europe.

In Georgia, Russian troops and tanks advanced to within 30 km of Tbilisi
Saturday, Aug. 15. A Russian general said Sunday they had started pulling
out after president Dimitry Medvedev signed the ceasefire agreement with
Georgia and president George W. Bush called again for an immediate
withdrawal.

After routing Georgia over the breakaway enclaves of South Ossetia and
Abkhazia, Moscow appears to be eying Poland, the Middle East, and possibly
Ukraine, as the main arenas for its reprisals.

Yushchenko gives refuge to Saakashvili’s family

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili’s wife and two children are reported
to have taken refuge in the Ukraine at the holiday home of its President,
Viktor Yushchenko.

Russian newspaper DNI.ru reports that Saakashvili’s wife, Sandra Roelofs,
was visiting the Olympics in Beijing with her children when Georgia attacked
South Ossetia. But instead of returning to Tbilisi, they decided to stay at
Yushchenko’s closely guarded dacha on the Crimean Peninsula.

The two presidents’ families have a close relationship – Yushchenko is a
godfather of Saakashvili’s younger son, while Saakashvili christened one of
Yushchenko’s daughters.

It was earlier reported that Roelofs was set to return to the U.S. and seek
help from her psychotherapist. She was said to be stressed by the news of
Georgia’s offensive in its breakaway republic of South Ossetia.

As a result of the attack by the Georgian army, the ancient town of
Tskhinvali was almost wiped out and over two thousand people were killed.

Row escalates over U.S. media bias

The South Ossetian family of a 12 year old American girl have renewed their
attack on the U.S. TV network which stopped them from telling their story of
Georgian aggression on air. The live interview, which has whipped up a storm
over media bias, saw the girl and her aunt describe how Russian soldiers
saved them from Georgian attack – only to be bizarrely cut off after just
two minutes.

It’s led to concerns over the objectivity of coverage of the crisis, with
claims that Americans are not hearing both sides of the story.

And the family of 12 year old Amanda Kokoeva, who was visiting her relatives
in South Ossetia, are determined that more people hear their account.

Amanda’s other aunt, who was with her when the war broke out, says that
America’s media is shutting off its ears, refusing to acknowledge what she
describes as Georgia trying to ‘annihilate [Ossetians] as a people’.

Georgia denies any accusation of genocide. Instead it claims its military
campaign was aimed at establishing order over a breakaway region.

This war of words means nothing to Amanda’s cousin Yana.
