When I was there back in the 80's -- we had quite a bit of it. I referred
to it as "fruit loop" weed because the colors of the hairs encircling the
weed was incredible! There were purple, red, orange, and other various
colors resembling the cereal "fruit loops". It was a mild sativa high that
caused one to laugh a great deal. It had a real fruity / banana flavor that
resonated in your mouth even after smoking it. It was really sweet and had
a really sweet smell as well as flavor. As far as strength; in retrospect,
it wasn't that strong but there were really very few strains that were
considered Strong back then. Of course Panama Red was among one of the
strength contenders. Panama Red is gone even from Panama now. I lived
there for a number of years in the 1990's and the few farmers that were left
were growing Colombian stock developed by the Dutch and had abandoned the
old strain. I wonder if anyone has some true Panama Red seeds left...? It
was truly one of my favorite varieties.

"Real" Malawi, in the form of the cob, tastes somewhat like
banannas because of the Malawi Gold Cob curing method of wrapping big
buds in bananna leaves. Mmmmmm, what I wouldn't give to smoke one of
those actual cobs! That is a treat rarely afforded people without some
incredible connections (probably the same way one would come about
Hawiian-grown Mowie Wowie; yeah, that hard to come by!).
