My take on this one is that buying the seeds is definitely worth it. I
have limited space, and usually grow just 4 plants at a time. I want
those four plants to be good, and so I usually buy feminised seeds
with a good reputation. So far this has worked pretty well for me -
I'll plant about 6 seeds. Choose the healthiest looking 4, and grow
those. The cost of the seeds is pretty small - about $40 - compared
with the other costs (the electricity!).
I suppose if I had more space and was interested in breeding (and so
risking having a few plants turn out to be not so good), I'd fiddle
about with pollination etc, but for my partiicular situation, buying
the seeds works well.
