Is there a Doctor in the house?

Having reached that certain age (mid fifties), and constantly bombarded
with horrific TV ad's re prostate, cholesterol etc etc, I decided to see
a doctor for the third time in my life for a checkup.

1st question - do you smoke?...yes..got the obligatory lecture - fair
enough.

2nd question...do you drink?...somewhat intimidated by the smoking
lecture I decided to lie a little..."well I'm a bit partial to single
malt...how much?...oh about a bottle in five days" I mumbled.

The quack nearly dropped his pen - his eyes widened and then fixed me
with a very stern gaze, and proceeded to gve me a lecture that made the
smoking one seem like a fairytale.

It seems I'm on a slippery-slide to hell, risking everything from high
blood pressure to impotence.

Given that I'd halved my real consumption, I'm now fully paranoid every
time I have a tipple!

To get to the point - one of the ill-effects apparently is obesity. This
came as a surprise - I always thought that was a result of high sugar,
high carb things such as beer.

Out of interest, how much do you _really_ drink?

Standard day about half a bottle - up to a bottle on special occasions -
like when it rains or something.

Anything in excess of 21 units per week is against UK health advice. A 700ml
bottle of spirits contains, on average, 28 or more units. That's for
standard 40%% abv stuff.

You might want to consider cutting down just a wee bit.

Have you had a liver enzyme test?

Personally, I considered myself to be drinking too much when my levels hit
about 1.5 70cl bottles a week. I'm now taking a break from alcohol for a
week or three.

Hallo zusammen,

It is not the beer that makes you fat, it's the things you eat alongside
with it. If you a lot of fat, that makes you fat.

For a liter of beer consider this as energy:
32 g carbs
40 g fat
400 kcal

For a liter of whisky consider this as energy:
0 g carbs
0 g fat
350 g alcohol
2375 kcal

Unlike brews, there are essentially no sugars or carbs in whiskeys or
whiskys. You might also ask on alt.support.diabetes.

I'm not Bert, but I drink between 16 and 20 oz of 40%% abv/day.
