Mom, apple pie and al Qaeda

One of the more interesting stories lost in the wake of this week's Bush's
daily blitzkrieg of bilge, was the appearance, last weekend, of an al Qaeda
"recruitment" tape headlined by a fellow named Azzam the American.
Azzam, in reality, is California's own Adam Gadahn aka Adam Pearlman, raised
by a Jewish-Catholic family. In the spotlight, Azzam was quite loquacious,
offering such bromides as "Those who think that democracy is synonymous with
freedom are either people who haven't experienced life in America or
Americans who haven't lived abroad."
He stopped short of asking Joe Lieberman to drop out of his re-election bid.
The tape was interesting on a number of levels, art direction not being one
of them. It opens with Major League al Qaeda's number two man (as opposed to
the dozens of Minor League al Qaeda number two men we keep catching in
Iraq), Ayman al-Zawahri, doing his best Ed McMahon imitation.
