Haiti: Municipal Election Results Still Not Released

Puerto Principe, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Almost a month and a half after the
municipal, local and legislative elections in Haiti, the results of the
vote have still not been released.

Irregularities in the count have prevented naming of the winning candidates
who will direct 142 towns, 570 Municipal Councils of Administration, mayors
and city delegations.

The President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), Max Mathurin, has
now announced that the report of the election center will be released before
the end of January.

Regarding election of 10 deputies and three elected senators, he said that
the legislator of Lachapelle municipality is still unresolved and there was
evidence of election fraud.

1,000 march through Haitian capital to demand Aristide's return

The Associated Press
Thursday, December 28, 2006
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti

About 1,000 supporters of ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide
marched through the Haitian capital Thursday to demand his return from exile
and protest the presence of U.N. peacekeepers.

The peaceful demonstration marked the largest show of support in months for
Aristide, who fled Haiti in February 2004 amid a violent uprising and has
been living in South Africa.

"This is a gift for the end of the year for President Aristide," said
Deshommes Presengloire, a spokesman for Aristide's Lavalas party.

Haiti: Blue Helmets Bring No Peace

Central Bureau, Dec 30 (Prensa Latina) Far from helping to keep the peace
as they claimed, troops of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)
continue stirring up strife in that Caribbean nation.

Besides abuse and sexual trade denounced by social and humanitarian bodies,
the blue-helmets have staged various armed attacks against the civil
population in that poor state.

One of the most rapped by the public opinion was carried out by 400
MINUSTAH agents, who besieged and machine-gunned the Cite Soleil district.

People in that community assured that members of that international force,
supported by some Haitian police officers, opened fire on the morning of
Dec 22, without apparent reasons, and extended attacks during the day
killing 40 civilians.

Chaos Reigns in Haiti

By Jean Michel Caroit
English translation by Leslie Thatcher

The horrible crime shattered Haiti. Brilliant student Farah
Dessources, 20, was tortured and murdered by her kidnappers. Her
mutilated body was found in mid-November, despite her mother, of modest
means, having paid a ransom. Several days later, on November 25th, the
corpse of a six-year-old child, Carl Roobenz Francillon, appeared.
Kidnapped at the exit of his school, he had been strangled, even though
his parents also had paid what the kidnappers demanded.

Farah's funeral took on the look of a demonstration against the
United Nations Mission in Haiti (Minustah), which numbers about 9,000
Blue Helmets, and against President Ren

United Nations Launches Aid Appeal for Haiti

Geneva, December 19 (RHC)-- The United Nations has made an appeal for 98
million dollars to help Haiti. The appeal, for the period 2006 to 2007, is
aimed to strengthen Haiti's government and to help it meet humanitarian
needs.

According to Joel Boutroue of the UN's Haiti mission, the multi-million
dollar aid appeal is also aimed at "ensuring that authorities are better
prepared in the event of natural disasters." Speaking with reporters in
Geneva, Boutroue said that "all indicators show that Haiti continues to be
the poorest country in the northern hemisphere."
