Alaska Question: What are current gas prices?

Author: Jack Johnson
Date: May 30, 2008 17:16

Here, in Michigan, we are currently paying $4.08 for regular. That is
down, from $4.18, for regular, over the Memorial Day weekend. But, I'm
sure it'll keep going up.......

Stevens versus Begich for the Senate

Author: bookburn
Date: May 30, 2008 06:07

Stevens looks really "long in the tooth" these days and has some legal
baggage he is carrying into the election this time, which is still
on-going. Even son Ben has been forced to step down from his position
in the State Senate and has ethics charges to deal with.

Another Alaska political name, Begich, is evidently going to be
Stevens opposition, assuming Stevens will be the republican nominee. I
heard Stevens on television saying he thought a US Senator should
preferably have a law degree, or at least a college education,
referring to Begich, who has neither.

It seems politics runs in families in Alaska. Not only did Governor
Murkowski appoint his daughter to succeed him in the Senate, but
Senator Stevens no doubt had hopes for son Ben to be similarly
elevated. Mayor Begich, we know, is related to Representative Nick
Begich, who was Alaska's rep to the US House at the time he died in
that famous missing plane incident with Hale Boggs.

There are so many studies, that seem to refute the findings, of the
study before it. Who really knows? If you wait 5 minutes, you can
find another study, to refute what you just said...(lol).

  Cell phones and cancer

Author: jerryN
Date: May 27, 2008 23:05

I watched Larry King tonight and found out a lot about what might be a
real risk. The doctors said to use an ear piece and do not carry the
cell phones in your shirt pocket like I have been doing for the last
15 years. Now they tell us the manufacturer's literature says to
carry the cell phone in a holster and to not use the cell phone less
than one inch from your ear. Hey, thanks everyone, now after 15
friggin years I learn about the cancer risk on CNN.

  Deadliest Catch...

Author: Eric
Date: May 27, 2008 10:41

While watching part of the "Deadliest Catch" marathon on Discovery Channel,
I couldn't help but think of ways to make crab fishing more efficient and
safer in the Bering Sea.

Some ideas that came to mind for crab fishing to join the 21st Century:

- Blindly throwing those pot traps into the water without knowing will full
certaintly that crabs are on the ocean floor at your location is stupid.
You could have a robotic submarine that allows you to prospect your area
before throwing the traps in. If there are no crabs there, move on!

- Enclose the deck! The only reason that the deck can't be enclosed is
because how they use a big crane to move the pots around before tossing them
off the side. So, get rid of the crane (and pully)! The deck could be
fully enclosed and the pots could be longlined over a ramp on the back of
the boat. You could even make it all automatic by coming up with some sort
of elevator belt machine. Press a button and the pots automatically start
longlining over the back ramp. For pulling them back up, it is done in
reverse. All automatic. There should be enough room in the enclosed deck
to house all the necessary room for the longline rope as well. The rope
could automatically spindle itself as it comes aboard.

Does anyone remember the 59ers from Detroit, Michigan?

Author: jerryN
Date: May 27, 2008 00:10

I remember them because we moved from Ketchikan to the Interior that
same year. The main reason I invite anyone to Alaska is that so many
leave, and it is so sad to see the trials and tribulations end in some
retirement home in the lower forty eight. Only a few stay. I have
watched exuberant spirits pass in the wind, and when I go up Shaw
Creek and hang out in my favorite moose hunting tree, I can feel their
spirits pass by in the wind as I name those that have died one by
one. The North is indeed a harsh place to live. The law of the land
is "the strong survive and the weak perish."

Detroit's 59ers -- Alaska or bust!
Forty nine years ago on March 5, 1959, a group of 21 adventure-bound
Detroit families embarked on a 4,500 mile journey to the Alaskan
wilderness.
Known as the 59ers, the travelers wanted to trade the rat race of city
living for the challenges of pioneer life in the Alaskan wilderness.
The route taken by the caravan.

Re: Question: ANWR, to drill, or, not? (Burt)

Thanks for being so frank. No, I don't base my opinions on a political
ng. We just do the typical "back and forth". I'm interested in the
opinions of you folks, in Alaska.
As for the American auto industry, I agree, in some ways. I wouldn't
go as far, as to call my fellow Michiganders......"knuckle-draggers".
They are honest people, trying to make a good living, like anyone else.
But, I get the point.

As for....."where have you been for the last 30 years".....I'm 36 years
old, and I've been, here, in Michigan. Our industries are old, and
falling apart. We are beginning to lose our standard of living, here.
One reason I originally posted, with your group, is because I am
considering leaving Michigan. And, I wanted to ask about how the
economy, in Alaska is. That's all.
I do have a lot of questions, about Alaska, because I like the state.
(what I know of it).

Question: ANWR, to drill, or, not?

Author: Jack Johnson

I post in a political newsgroup, and the group is split, between those
who want to explore and develope Anwr, and those who don't. Since you
all live in Alaska.....what is your opinion(s)?

I think it can create jobs, and revenue, not to mention oil, we can use
as a nation. As long as it is done carefully, I am in favor of it.

Jack.
