Black screen on HP dv2000 notebook

Author: William J. Lunsford
Date: Dec 26, 2008 15:01

A niece brought home an HPdv2000 notebook with an absolutely blank black
screen. There is no beep or fan noise on startup -- nothing but the normal
lights at the top of the keyboard. I tested the AC adapter following the
instructions on the HP Website. The AC adapter is OK. I reseated the RAM and
tried each DIMM individually in both slots, but nothing worked. My niece
took the notebook to Geek Squad before she came home and was told by Geek
Squad that the motherboard is bad. Is there something else I should try
before telling her that Geek Squad may be right.

  Athlon 64 X2 overheating issues

Author: Dave
Date: Dec 26, 2008 10:37

I upgraded my computer recently to a new motherboard/cpu/etc.. and I'm
having a lot of overheating issues with it when I do intense 3D renders.

At present I have the following:

GIGABYTE GA-MA78G-DS3H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane 2.5GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W
Dual-Core Processor

At first I was using the stock fan that came in the retail box for the
processor, but after reading numerous reviews on NewEgg, I upgraded to a

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler

However, it's only marginally better. Not the great performance others
have claimed.

I am not overclocking the system at all and I did use Arctic Silver
compound when I installed the heat sink.

I am planning on upgraded to a QuadCore CPU in the next month, but I'm
concerned I may have issue with that as well.

Any tips? Any sites I should visit?

Thanks!

Hi Gab,

Dosbox works great (especially with old sierra games (GK1 being one of my
favorites).

I am not sure you can install 98 on your machine but if you got an old
license you can easily run it in Virtual PC (free download from the
microsoft site) (I played nautilus that way partially).

  New build freezes

Author:
Date: Dec 25, 2008 23:26

Hi,

Built a new system with the following specs:

Antec Sonata case III PSU 500W midi tower
3 Seagate baracuda's 7200.11 500GB 7200rpm SATA
Asus ENGTX260 TOP/HDTP 896MB
Kingston 4GB kit (2x2) KVR1333D3N9K2
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 GHz
Gigabyte GA EP45T DSR S775 4xDDR3 (replaced this with asus P5QC however)
Lite-on iHAS120 20 DVDRW SATA

Unfotunately the system freezes completely randomly. First it used to freeze
a few times when I started the system The I could play for instance
oblivion for a while work in visual studio during the day and when playing
again in the evening it might freeze one or two times. But the system seemed
to become more unstable. Especially freezing very fast when playing any 3D
game. But also when playing video files or less frequently (but still a few
tmes per day) when just on the desktop.

  Re: UPS in blackouts

Is it OK if you pull the power cord by its plug? ;-)

Whatever. I do it once every time I buy a new UPS and that's how
I know it works (or not).

I am not an electrician but as I see it a UPS is designed to
work in /emergency/ situations. This may include unexpected loss
of ground in the room, building, or a given 10 sq mile area due
to acts of Fubar.

Also, installing a UPS on a fully functioning network of
whatever size and THEN wondering whether it will actually work
is a philosophy which leaves something to be desired.
