What's the best WinXP freeware amplifier for audio in an AVI file?

0. I have a 600 Mbyte AVI file created by Camtasia whose sound volume is
too low. Is there freeware out there to amplify just the audio portion of
the video file?

1. I'm watching & listening to the AVI file on a portable PC using Media
Player Classic freeware.
http://www.free-codecs.com/Media_Player_Classic_download.htm

2. The audio codec is "PCM Audio" while the video codec seems to be "tscc"
(aka "TechSmith's Screen Capture Codec"), according to G-Spot freeware:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm

3. I added the "tscc" codec to Windows using the K-Lite Codec pack (full):
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

4. However, the audio is too low on my portable PC
(even with the sound control panel and speakers turned to full volume).

5. I couldn't get Audacity freeware to amplify just the audio portion:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net

Since many students will be viewing and listening to these video files
created in a lecture hall using Camtasia, it behooves me to figure out
how best to amplify the audio portion of the lecture videos.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your suggestion which seems the most appropriate to amplify
the audio portion of a very large AVI video file.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing, but, this seems like the best method.
I'll let you know if/when I'm successful but we found out that our VPN
tunnel was dropping so the files were truncated coming up from China (where
the lectures were taught) so we have to start all over.

Another lecture is being uploaded (for some reason, uploads are more
relable than downloads) as we speak and in a few hours, I'm gonna try it
again.

Thanks for the hint. Hopefully I'll report back the steps so the next
person with the same problem can just follow suit. I did read many of the
tutorials on the virtual dub web site but none were specifically for
amplifying just the audio portion of a video stream.

Hi John,

Wow. Interesting. Korean Media Player. What a name!

If all else fails, we might try this but I'd rather amplify the audio than
have to force everyone to use a particular media player or
audio-amplification hardware.

I'm sure we'll figure out how to amplify just the audio portion of a video
stream as we can't be the first people to need this capability.

Hi Sul,

Thanks for the advice.

I was probably remiss in not mentioning that we don't control the hardware
that the students will be using so we can only control the input and the
file itself.

We're asking the people in China to tweak the mics so that they amplify as
much as possible the input signal and that might help. But, if not, we're
going to have to amplify the sound stream of the video files.

I'm sure it can be done as I'm sure we're not the first people to need it
so when we figure it out, there will be a usenet record of how to amplify
the audio portion of an AVI video file using readily available (we hope)
freeware.

Hi IB,

This is very interesting, especially since I'm using Media Player Classic
to play the 3-hour Camtasia 600 MB AVI file recordings.

I didn't know MPC had this capability but, as I had said in a recent reply,
I won't be able to control what software the students will be using
eventually.

I suspect most, therefore, would use Media Player, so, the option may or
may not exist to perform ad-hoc amplification of the audio portion of the
video file.

But, I'm sure one or more suggested methods will work to amplify the audio
portion of an AVI file and you can rest assured I'll let everyone know here
on this newsgroup, as always.

Thanks,
Donna
