  Thunderbird ImportExportTools extension

Author: spoon2001

Hi all.

One thing I liked about Outlook Express is that I could drag and drop
messages out of OE and they would be come EML files. And it worked the
other way - I could drag and drop EML files into an OE folder and they
would become part of the DBX file associated with that OE folder.

Not so with Thunderbird. I had some messages on one Thunderbird
installation that I wanted to get into another Tbird installation. I was
able to do it manually with a lot of fiddling with the MBOX files. But I
sure would have liked the drag and drop function that I had with OE.

I still haven't found that drag and drop function, but I did find a
Thunderbird extension that does make it quite a bit easier to get messages
out of one Thunderbird and into another:

ImportExportTools (MboxImport enhanced)
http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html

I'd appreciate information about other useful tools for this sort of thing.

Irritating Firefox wrong guesses at what URLs you are typing (how to remove)?

Author: Tom
Date: Jul 11, 2008 23:18

Firefox is a wonderful program but it has an irritatingly disgusting
propensity to guess at the URLs I'm about to type, almost always, if not
always guessing wrongly.

I have all my cookies turned off; I have Firefox tools -> options set to
not save any history; to not save any bookmarks or downloaded files; to
clear all private data upon closing; I've checkmarked every box for all
types of private data; etc.

Yet, Firefox, still insists on wasting my time and yours popping up
annoying ridiculous suggestions for URLs to go to that I'll never ever
visit.

How do I turn this ugly Firefox guess at the wrong url off?

I want to say hello. sorry its taken so long.

I got thrown off sci.crypt and the alt privacy groups for
behaving like a shit-for-brains moron that I am. Now Ive moved
over to alt.comp.freeware to give them the same shit I gave all
the other groups.
those motherfucking assholes laughed at my encrypted barcode
ideas, and I made them pay the price for laughing at me. think
SPORGE. tons of it for months. HAHAHAHAHA.

I use sockpuppets by the dozen and post thru countless news
servers and I always post a huge pile of shit and other useless
drivel that nobody takes seriously because Im a mad moron.

I also like forging other peoples names just to create havoc.
sometimes I answer my own forgeries just to add fun.

my best friend on alt.comp.freeware is Franklin because he is
also a braindead moron and spends his time pissing in the group
for fun. we both like having fun. Also my sockpuppets like having
fun too - Little Puke, Big Puke and the whole gang.

we are truly the biggest bunch of cunts you have ever met.
the only difference is that Franklin has had more experience at it.

  screenreader software for language learning

Author: sobriquet
Date: Jul 11, 2008 15:26

Hello.
Screenreader software is something that enables blind or visually
impaired people to hear the text on the screen being spoken out loud.
Such software is also potentially very useful for people who want to
learn foreign languages (or for foreign people who want to learn
English), however, it would require a screenreader to render foreign
languages to spoken language. It would be most useful if it had a kind
of visualization to guide your attention over the text as it's being
spoken out loud by the computer to achieve an optimal association
between the text on screen as you read along and the associated spoken
text. Similar to what you often see in karaoke video's, where some
kind of marker indicates what text is supposed to be spoken (or sung).

Does anyone know of any freeware or shareware (or open source or
commercial software) that comes close to this description or might be
useful for people who'd like to learn English or other languages?

Kind regards & thanks in advance for any suggestions, Niek Sprakel

Nym shifts by Hummingbird/Aracari: 1400/756 this year

Author: Franklin
Date: Jul 11, 2008 14:28

The count of nym shifts by Chris Millbank/Hummingbird is already at 756.

These nym shifts are what what Chris likes to call "sockpuppets" when he
is making a k00k claim about someone else's details like change of email
address.

In UK.POLITICS.MISC Chris has posted as ARACARI 756 times.

If you usually read UK.POLITICS.MISC you would think Chris's use of the
name "Hummingbird" was the nym shift. "Hummingbird" has been by Chris
Millbank used over 1,400 times this year.

Pdf's quite often have scanned pictures of text, which can't be
searched. Maybe that's the problem ?

  Program to restore file content

Author: fairywearsboots
Date: Jul 11, 2008 13:16

Hi,

I have, or better had, a yet unnamed .txt file (new textfile.txt) with a
bunch of important notes I'd hate to lose. When I tried to rename the file,
I got a message that a file with the new name already existed and if I
wanted to proceed. As there definitely was no file with the new name I did
proceed. Now I have an empty file with the new name. For a while it still
hat 4 KB, or at least the Windows Explorer said it had, now it's 0 Kb.

Is there a program that can retrieve/restore the old no-name file including
my notes? I tried Roadkils Undeleter, it found a few thousand deleted files,
but as the output is obviously not sortable it's useless, there's just no
way to find a single file in this haystack. But anyways I'm pretty sure an
undeleter is not what I need as the file was overwritten, not deleted.

Help is greatly appreciated.

TIA

  alt.comp.freeware's Ware Glossary

Author: Susan Bugher
Date: Jul 11, 2008 10:27

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/WareGlossary.php

Software: the instructions executed by a computer.

In theory software does not include the data processed by the
instructions. In practice a combination of instructions and data is
often called software.

Below is a brief glossary defining ware types shown on the Pricelessware
pages and/ or used in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup.

Several ware types may be used when describing a program (for example:
Donationware and Liteware and Betaware). Ware types are listed in
alphabetical order.

Abandonware: software that the original owner no longer offers to the
public. Abandonware refers to a product that is no longer marketed or
distributed by the author/company that published it. Orphanware is used
when the author cannot be located or the company is no longer in
existence. Copyright laws apply to Orphanware and Abandonware. The
programs are freeware only if they were released as freeware (or given
freeware status by the owner at a later date).

Adware: software that displays advertising for other products and/or
services (often downloaded from the internet by the software).
