  Dial Up Problem

Author: smackedass
Date: Jan 18, 2007 08:46

(I know that some of you are annoyed by cross-posted messages, I will
probably cross-post this one, albeit in separate postings, I've got to get
to the bottom of this)

Hello again,

A customer of mine is having a sporadic, yet persistent, problem. When the
problem is in force, he cannot disconnect, unless he shuts the computer
down. Then, upon reboot, he will attempt to connect; he does NOT connect,
yet if he right-clicks on the dial-up icon, the menu displays "Disconnect",
as if the OS "thinks" that he is connected. Sometimes, the shortcut for
dialup that is on the desktop disappears; sometimes, the shortcut that is in
the tray disappears. Also, I was unable to see the Windows Firewall.
Obviously, the connection is "confused".

OS: Windows XP HE SP2, newly re-installed, as of 3 weeks ago.

I've tried several different modems, to no avail.

Modem first connects through a UPS, then goes to a splitter, which also
accomodates a standard telephone. My first thought was, it's the UPS,
disconnected from the UPS, did not solve problem. My second thought was,
it's the splitter; I went direct to the telephone port, still did not solve
the problem.

Gee, it's deja vu all over again.

Google is your friend.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986

That was on top of the list.

Technicians need to perform research, all of the time. I can honestly say
that I spend more time doing research than any other task, except for
driving, maybe.

Yes, there are times when a technician will have to ask somebody something,
but most of the answers are out there, already.

  remote computer repair

Hi

Thinking of buying some Remote Computer Repair Software so that when
customers phone in with problems I can take control of their machine easily
and sort it. But there seems to be quite a variety and big differences in
price. PcAnywhere, Radmin, Syberfix, Danware NetOp Remote On Demand,
LogMeIn etc. Any recommendations welcome.

Thanks

Lizzie

  XP HE Upgrade Question

Author: smackedass
Date: Jan 14, 2007 08:36

Hello,

This question is not as much technical, or urgent as it is hypothetical.

Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade is "upgradable" (read: legally) from '98 and
ME. However, it is not "upgradable" from NT 4.0 or 2000 Pro.

Can someone out there explain the logic of this?

I am not asking for any loophole stragegies, or any how-to piracy
techniques. I simply don't understand the logic.

Thanks, in advance.

  Re: Bad hard drive

Every so often, we see a system that apparently eats hard drives (and/or
other components, but usually hard drives).

The motherboard really can't do this, but the power supply can, if it's
bad (in particular, if the 12 volt line is way off, especially high).

Another possible culprit is cooling ... hard drives can be "cooked" in
some cabinets, due to lack of ventilation.

What planet is this nutcase on?

Please leave stuff like this off the Cisco newsgroup.

  Taking the A+ soon ...

Author: Sergio Nova
Date: Jan 10, 2007 13:37

Hi guys !

Just joined this newsgroup and it's brilliant !

Been through the "beast" (Michael Meyers All in One A+) and I'm doing all
the mock tests I can find around ... I was going to give myself a month
before taking the exams ...

To be honest I'm a little nervous (tests always made me nervous) and I was
wondering if you have a word of advise (or courage) for this newbie in the
business ... :)

Many thanks in advance,

Serg
