  Verizon Broadband

Author: me
Date: Sep 6, 2008 08:04

I suspect this is the wrong NG in which to post this question, but
couldn't find one that seemed to fit the bill.

Is anyone reading here using Verizon's 3G/Broadband service? And, if
so, are you in what might be considered a "fringe" area? Then, if you
are in such an area, what kind of experience are you having with the
service--reception, difficulties, speeds? Finally, which model of
"card" are you using?

Reason I'm asking is that I DO live in a fringe area, and the DSL
provider here is pretty flaky. Circuit City has some kind of promo
going on this month with Verizon where one can get one of the USB
devices free with a 2-yr. contract, at the $60/mo. rate. That's just a
bit more than I pay for DSL; but, if I could get better service, I
wouldn't mind paying a bit more. Plus, there is the added advantage
that when I travel (with my laptop), I could take my high-speed Internet
service with me, and not be looking for Panera Bread outlets or wi-fi
enabled hotels all the time!

Thanks for your replies.

Why is Verizon always behind in releasing Palm Treos? GSM the new wave?

Author: RandyF

Sprint, T-Mobile, name it. The GSM standard phones are released often
months before Verizon. Is CDMA more difficullt to manage? According
to a recent report, GSM services in the US appear to be outpacing
growth in Europe. Should we all be switching to GSM systems?

I will also postthis message in the Palm and Treo groups.

Hanna and Ike via cell phone

As I mentioned use you phone to listen to the hurricane emergency nets
as these East Coast storms unfold.

The iPhone for instance works with the iPhone tuner application
perfectly, just enter URL and listen to the VoIP stream all day long.
Save the URL as a Tuner favorite and you can pull it back up instantly
at any time.

With other phones and non AT&T networks your ability to monitor may
vary.

You can monitor these nets from a PC also, but it is a lot more useful
to be able to carry the net with you on a cell phone.

Bob, KC4QLP writes

Tropical Storm Hanna is about to bear down on the Carolinas late
Friday into Saturday. The *KC4QLP-C* Echolink conference server is
still being used for those outside of the storms effected area for
those that wish to monitor net activities which will begin at 6pm
eastern, 2300 UTC Friday. The net can also be monitored via eQSO in
the KC4QLP-R "room" and via the web at http://kc4qlp.dyndns.org:8082
and begining Friday at the following websites....http://

  Best spk phone sound?

Author: Gus
Date: Sep 4, 2008 19:59

Looking to retire an 7 yr old Audiovox that has a decent quality spk
phone and started trying the new toys at a V store. Looks like spk
phones are not in vogue anymore, all I've found is very poor sound
quality, low volume among the 8 lower priced phones I've tried so far.

Will I get better (louder) sound from the "bells & whistles" phones?
Can't see paying those prices when all I need is a plain ole cell phone.
Is eBay worth checking out for a used phone if it was noted for having a
great spk phone?

What older phones noted for great spk phone capability are worth looking
at on eBay?

If I buy a used phone how do I get it enabled, go to a V store or can
they do this by my calling V with the serial number for the used phone?

Patent Applied For Copy Paste Using “Multitouch data fusion”

Author: 4phun
Date: Sep 4, 2008 06:31

Apple to remain light years ahead of the competition!

New patent describes copy and paste via voice input/MT, motion
sensors/Multi-Touch, visual data/MT fusion.

Apple is looking beyond Multi-Touch
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Multi_Touch_Data_Fusion_Camera_Voice_Force_Sensors

When it was first introduced in January 2007, iPhone’s Multi-Touch
interface was a real breakthrough in operation of small portable
devices.

Now, if the ideas sketched out in a new Apple patent application
ā€œMultitouch data fusionā€ are implemented, we may soon see another
qualitative leap in the usability of user interfaces in various
computing devices.

Multi-Touch (MT) interface is perfectly good for many of the device
control and operation functions. But on-screen 2D object manipulation
has some inherent limitations too, and there are quite a few actions
that can be done better by other input means. And electronic devices
that use MT, usually have quite a few of these other input means. That
can include cameras, microphones, accelerometers, biometric sensors,
temperature sensors, etc;.
